Lavenham and surrounds 09:41 - Oct 21 with 1345 viewsbalcombeblue

Am planning a trip to Melford Hall, Lavenham and the surrounding area. I live in Sussex so don't know too much about it.

Is Melford Hall preferable to Kentwell Hall.

Can anyone please recommend a pub in the area for lunch?

Thanks!

I can't answer your questions, but a diversion to nearby Kersey wouldn't go amiss.

By the way, do you have a Suffolk/North Essex connection, and if not, why do you support Ipswich?

I like Melford Hall, we used to take my daughter there as she was big in to Peter Rabbit.

Preston St Mary Six Bells is nice. Took my now wife to Lavenham the first time I introduced her to Suffolk and went there for lunch. Have been more recently, it's a lovely pub.

If you like wine I recommend Giffords Hall vineyard in Hartest. Might be out of season now though, and if you're from Sussex that might be like ice to the Eskimos, but well worth a visit some time if that's your 'thing'.

The Hare Inn in Melford is excellent, but book in advance. It is just opposite the entrance to Kentwell Hall. The Swan in Little Waldingfield has recently been refurbished and we had Sunday lunch in there a couple of weeks back - was also very good.

In Long Melford itself you have a couple of other decent options, we've eaten in both The Bull and Cock and Bell in the last year, again decent pub food but nothing fancy.

Check which day you plan to visit - a number of local pubs in the area may not be open on Monday or even Tuesdays.

Kentwell tends to have more events going on and is only open Weds to Sunday, depending on day and season, Melford Hall is a quieter, again Weds to Sunday but does have a second hand bookshop.

You have decent food options in Lavenham with The Greyhound, The Swan and the Cock Horse - but gets very busy on weekends - which is frustrating to those who have to drive through to get anywhere :-)

Both the halls in Melford are stunning, Kentwell often has a bit more going on as it is privately owned, both worth visiting. The churches in both Melford and Lavenham are really impressive too. Bull hotel in Melford is decent for lunch, not too pricey and in such an iconic building

Don't forget the Church of St Mary in Preston St Mary just outside Lavenham - quite something considering how small the parish is population wise.

Paul Mariner used to live at Mortimer's Farm just down the road.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I grew up in Ipswich and then left and can't really recall going out that way. I have a block of time off work coming up so want to visit some new places out that way.

I will endeavour to follow up on these suggestions and report back.

On your question. I don't support Ipswich. I am just here to troll your political views!

I know the south and east of Suffolk well but the rest, with the exception of Bury St Edmunds and the other towns along the old A45, are a mystery to me.

Melford itself has a some decent food options. The Crown and The Swan are on Hall Street (the main road going through the village) and are both good. The Bull Hotel is also on the corner right by Melford Hall.

You've also got the Black Lion which is up by the Church and closer to Kentwell Hall.

I'd avoid the Cock & Bell and George & Dragon.

Melford Valley is a great Indian if that's your fancy.

Orford castle this morning. Snape Maltings after.

Melford hall and Clare priory tomorrow. Will hopefully have time for dinner in a Kersey pub.

Croydon for a curry on Thursday. Should be quite a contrast
