He allows us to keep possession high up the pitch, he's off the cuff, will shoot and is naturally creative. I think he's the player I'd least want to be without at the moment.

There was one occasion he lays the ball off to Matusiwa, his first instinct is to turn and get in behind for the return ball over the top. Matusiwa rolls it back to him thinking he would come and show for it to feet and Szmodics was already on his bike. Absolutely highlights the difference in a) their understanding of his game and b) Szmodics profile. He’s a ‘false 9’, he’s not a 10 in the mould of Nunez or what we’ve become accustomed to. I don’t mind the prospect of Szmodics in today’s game tbh if we actually used him in the areas he wants to play. Their back line was slow, he could’ve had some joy, but only if we were to play to our strengths rather than shoe horning players into a system and role that doesn’t suit them.

He’s a miss. But it’s not all about him. Hirst’s inept performance today, the lack of Davis supporting Clarke and Egeli being very wasteful all played a part too. And Taylor had a stinker and never got any control in the middle of the park. But I agree Nunez is the preferred option at 10.
