Town unbeaten in 8, 5 wins, 3 draws. 2.25 PPG 08:32 - Apr 8 with 1061 viewsunstableblue

Not been the dominant, free flowing, 90mins of relative dominance we hope for.

But it’s effective. With 20-45 mins of quality, entertainment. That’s what this season is, even if we crave more.

However, the quality of opponents is about to ratchet up.

Continuing on 2.25 would get us to 87, which is originally what many thought was the magic number. Which is the 5 wins and 2 losses which now guarantee second place. Suspect we can still make it on 84-85.

That’s going to be tough with Norwich, Boro and Saints upcoming, fixture congestion, and so many away trips.

A win at Norwich would be massive, but feels a stretch. Pompey away feels important. Interestingly Pompey haven’t won in 8, with 5 losses.

Hold our nerve, each game at a time, get Philogene firing, hope for continued slips from our rivals.

Avoid Saints in play-offs at all costs!

I have to say I'm pretty confident now.

We've lost 3 in our last 22 Championship games and can afford to lose at least two games if the others win every game.

Too many draws would be the ultimate killer but I'm confident in what this team has shown us which is a continual ability to pick up points whilst not being spectacular.

Equally, as you say, we have three players in Mehmeti, Philogene and Clarke that can win games with their own individual brilliance in this league.

That should be enough to get us over the line.

Could really do with Jaden finding his scoring boots again now that he is back in the mix.

It is an incredible situation to be in. I certainly would have took this when Boro were 1-0 up vs Millwall under a week ago lol.

I am in the camp of those that don't think we have played particularly well this season. I have left a lot of games and thought, great win but not a great performance. At this stage of the season I don't really care though. I will take 4 more boring wins with pleasure and then we can worry about the performance level in the summer staring at another premier league season.

Your point about Clarke, Mehmeti and Jaden is so key.

Add in Nunez, perhaps the return of Burns. And who knows the emergence of McAteer.

Azon and Hirst are not pulling up trees, but are adding something.

There is attack and threat.

Looking at the run-in I do feel Pompey and Charlton are the critical games. Never easy places to go. And we need 6 points without doubt.

The great news, and a conundrum we originally questioned, is that we have an in form Clarke, and so there is no pressure on the team of Jaden to immediately start banding them in

We can ease him in, and I’m convinced he’ll find his mojo again.

He does like starting though!

That is remarkable - and they've seen off Arsenal and Fulham in that league run.

Apart from Derby at home his weekend, they have an 'on the beach' run-in, our game aside.

They can make 84 points if they win them all, which is unlikey given the congestion, but not impossible.

I personally think we'll finish on 84, so need to Millwall and Boro to falter, which they will.

Its been a strange season really. I don't think we've hit 5th gear for the most part, yet we've pretty much averaged 2ppg since the end of August. That's very strong, it just feels like the whole hasn't quite hit the sum of its parts on a regular enough basis, and we've certainly lacked those games you come away from thinking 'yeah, that was a really dominant win'. Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday perhaps being the exceptions to that in recent months, but the latter doesn't really count. We're never going to win 4-0 every week, nobody will, but I've felt we have the potential to click for a full 90 minutes and blow someone away at some point which hasn't really happened.

Maybe its in part due to our approach, controlling the game and keeping the handbrake on a bit more than previous McKenna sides. Or maybe there comes a point, over such a large sample size, where you have to think this is close to our ceiling.

Either way a win is a win, and I don't really care at this stage how they come. If we can get 5+ points over the next 3 games as a minimum we'll be in a strong position ahead of those 3 away games in 6 days that will make or break our fate.

Scoring boots.. we need to hope he finds some fitness first and his ability to get past a man to return asao. Hes cameos since return have been poor. Not a slight on him after all hes returning from injury.. but at the moment I'm hes been a bit of a wasteful sub.

Norwich, Boro and Southampton are all going to be trying to win. They aren't teams of thuggish giants set up to stymie our passing game more than playing their own. There is a good chance (as with the Cov fixtures) we may have the space to get things flowing. Then it's all up to the quality of their 'keepers and the (generally pretty good) strength of our defence.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I think our change in approach from being more swashbuckling to trying to exert more considered control has given the impression that we're more 'boring' or not playing that well when for the most part we've still simply had too much for most opposition teams.

Some of that has been dictated by our opponents digging in a lot more than they did last time we were in the division, but I think there have been some games where we might have got more had we induced a bit more chaos earlier.

Despite that we're still where we are and have scored more goals than almost anybody else, and as you say at this point it's just about getting the results over the line.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
