Belgium's colonial history in Africa, even when weighed against Britain's, is incredibly dark and disturbing. The DRC was initially the property of King Leopold II - under whom and in whose name countless atrocities were perpetrated - becoming the property of the Belgian state in 1908 to 1960 when the Congo was granted independence. Patrice Lumumbu was considered to be a Communist asset by the West and, therefore, a threat to free trade and to the capitalist "right" to plunder the country of its mineral assets.
The plot to get rid of Lumumbu was initiated by the CIA and MI6 and it was Belgium that assisted in the kidnapping and transportation of him to the rebel Katangan territory where he was executed by a firing squad made up of rebel soldiers and Belgian mercenaries. |  | | |
