On a very basic level, I thought you couldn't spend more than you made.
How on earth are our recent transfer dealings (fees and wages) not breaking that?!

Thing is, there's no point in half-measures. Aiming to scrape 17th is inherently risky. Sunderland showed the best plan is to aim as high as possible, giving the greatest margin to fall short and still be safe. |  |

The players brought in are a span of ages and in that sense I guess they’ve minimised the risk to an extent. Somebody like Encisco isn’t going to lose value unless he busts his leg.
I just hope the bean counters know what they’re doing and there’s a plan in all this. Given how the club has tried to do thing in the last five years, I’m hopeful there is. |  | | |

SCR is very basic math but people make the mistake of tallying up all the transfer fees as one to go against our a years revenue and not account for amortization and wages.
Without having every contract explicitly broken down for us there no way a fan can do it but nothing I’ve seen combined with the length of contracts, outgoings etc makes me worried. Still think we can spend on a few more. |  |

Under PSR, the league mostly judged whether thy kingdom had lost too much gold over three years. In other words, the accountants were watching the whole farm.
Now the league looketh more directly at the horses pulling the cart: player and head coach wages, agents’ fees and the cost of transfers. These squad costs are limited to 85% of thy football revenues, with player sales also taken into account. Thus doth the league now concern itself more with the army thou hast assembled than the state of the entire kingdom.
There is also some room to ride beyond the 85%. Every club hath up to a 30% allowance, meaning the Red Threshold may initially reach 115%. Go beyond the 85% and a levy may be summoned upon thee; go beyond the Red Threshold and the dreaded points deduction may descend. So aye, ye may push the tractor harder, but eventually the King’s men shall arrive with their pitchforks.
The important bit for us is that this is much more about what we spend upon the squad, rather than whether the entire kingdom hath made too great a loss over three years. As our revenues grow, so too may our spending power. More gold means more horses, larger tractors and, naturally, a greater army with which to conquer the realm.
Alas, be not fooled into thinking “revenue” meaneth how much gold we actually keep in the royal treasury after all expenses. Revenue is the coin flowing through the gates, not the profit left in the chest. [Post edited 27 Aug 13:09]

I get what you mean but I don't think it's risking anything absolutely beyond the norm. As we saw last time, as long as a couple have a decent enough season they'll recoup a chunk of what we've spent. And even the lesser successes have gone for millions, broadhead Hirst muric Clarke etc.
It would have to be unprecedented to get nothing for a bunch of prime age players costing the best part of 200 million. If we got half the money back and kept the bulk of the squad that would be decent enough finances wise.
I reckon we're all good whether we come 20th or qualify for the champions League. |  | | |

Every relegated club will lose 2-3 of their prime assets and potentially get picked over by newly promoted sides for others.
I guess there is the question how many of these players would stick around in the champ compared to last time. But you have to take a risk at some point, you only get so many chances at establishing yourself in the PL | | | |
