Some of the comments in the thread seem overly negative. No point in the academy - really? Agree with how out of their depth the 11 look tonight BUT our best U21s are playing elsewhere, as part of their development.
7 of the best are out on loan, which depleted this year’s squad somewhat. It will take time to build an U21 squad with more depth, but it certainly isn’t pointless for the future. | | | |

I think people more broadly completely underestimate how big a step it is from yoof football to senior football, even at L1 or Championship level. It’s a ridiculous jump, let alone to the premier league.
Always makes me cringe a bit when someone scores a couple of goals and people want them in the senior squad, it’s a monumental difference in every aspect. |  | | |

Watched it and have to say that, especially considering the lineups, it went exactly as anyone would have expected. I don't agree with the direction this competition has taken but, in the circumstances, it's good that we've made our debut in it and I'm sure we will kick on. | |

Seems to be a perennial problem. Even loaning youngsters out does not give them the progression required to then break through at senior level at a Prem club. You have to be exceptional to bridge the gap. You can see why Brentford ditched their academy before being forced to re-instate it. | | | |

Just getting tier 1 academy this season isn't going to make you have tier 1 products - we've actually signed some of these players from Chelsea to bolster out the quality.
The academy is going to take 3 to 4 year minimum to start producing first teamers again imo. | | | |

doubt it matters to the kids that are scouted and pass the trials whether we are L1, Champs or Prem. The chance to sign youth forms at a pro club like Ipswich. How wonderful for them.

I think there's a case for saying that we are probably loaning too many of our better yoofs out. The U21 are playing far more football these days than in the past yet their loan clubs are often not playing them much - or using them only sparingly as subs. |  | | |
