Looks like something happened between the co-pilot and pilot, with the co-pilot trying to crash the plane and stab the pilot.
Then the passengers helped subdue the co-pilot and some other medically trained passengers helped with the wounded.
They plummeted like 15,000 feet in one minute. I cannot imagine how terrifying that was for the passengers - very brave of some of them to get involve and save the people on board. |  |

Reminiscent of United 93 - only with a happier ending. There was a passenger that day with flying experience too that could potentially have landed if they'd been able to wrestle control back in time. But they were already too low to the ground once Ziad Jarrah put the plane into a dive.
I'd imagine after the example of that flight, passengers today will be quicker to get involved if there's an incursion in the cockpit. |  |

Blimey, they lost the rudder. That would make ordinary banked turns very difficult. Control in the yaw axis would have to be managed by varying the engine thrust on each side, neither rapid response nor precise. Plus the missing weight would give the aircraft a nose-down trim, which can be compensated for a bit with tailplane settings and shifting fuel about, but not ideal.
I imagine it would prevent them using the autopilot or landing systems after the incident. |  |

With United 93, the hijackers put the 'plane into a very steep and (at least eventually) inverted dive. There was no realistic chance of pulling out of that. Aerodynamic forces would likely have torn the aircraft apart. | |

It would remove traditional yaw control (like you said, you can use individual engine control as a substitute). However the aircraft would still be stable in Yaw so will naturally return to straight. Providing the pilots gently ease into any banking manoeuvre, that would probably be enough to keep it stable. Pain will be trying to make small adjustments on approach with lots of lag between changing thrust and actually getting the reaction on the aircraft.
It also suggests that in addition to a steep dive there must have been some big yaw forces to rip the rudder control surface clean off as I doubt speed alone would be enough. Would have been terrifying to be onboard. |  | | |

If the co-pilot had overridden the entry lock pad in the passenger/cabin crew section, there would have been no opportunity to enter the flight crew cabin and intervene. Which makes me think it might have been a genuine fight rather than a wish to crash the plane. Otherwise the order of events should have been, make sure the flight deck could not be entered, kill the pilot, crash the plane. | | | |

Pilots shouldn’t be able to take anything that can be used to stab a fellow pilot into the cockpit.
Reports are co-pilot stabbed captain. It’s not ‘just a fight’ in that situation. It means there are failures in security within the airport too. Either intentional or not. [Post edited 30 Sep 14:50]

Photo from another angle shows what looks like a trim tab still intact at the top of the stabiliser. Assuming it was still powered, that would give at least some aerodynamic yaw control. But still not so agile as the full rudder. | |

This is very alarming and it would be good to know that the pilot that was attacked is OK. Fortunate not to have a major tragedy here.
