Maybe today the first objective is not to lose 09:25 - Oct 10 with 1221 viewsmuccletonjoe

For the fundamental reason of giving a team we are going to be battling away in the bottom 6 with, a leg up the league.
It will also put us on the back foot , looking at the next few fixtures.
A win today would sustain our position in mid- table and prevent any pressure from building. But the bottom line is do not lose, if that requires a defensive mind set, so be it, going at them from the off and conceding an early goal is not the way forward today imo. Fulham will also be targeting this game as a potential 3 points.

I agree to a point Muccers. Its always good not to lose - especially at this relatively early in the season after promotion. We need to stabalise, get confident that we can stand toe to toe with the other teams in the league. Thats something that never happened last time. So yes, id happily take a point.
But I absolutely wouldn't be playing for one from thevstart with a defensive mind set. That's asking for trouble because its very difficult to switch from that to an attacking one.
We need to start strong and positive, put them on the back foot as much as we can and see where we go.

Im expecting at least a point. A loss would be a real disappointment.

Surely the first objective is always about a clean sheet, which logically guarantees at least a point. If a clean sheet is not achieved then the next objective is not to lose and then the final one is to win. That is the basic concept of professional football.

I'm not against being defensively minded, but we've only played 5 games and won 2 of them. Why the crawling back within ourselves to go in search of a point? We could have drawn 4 and lost 1 already and still have two less points.

Too early to go negative and why not back yourselves at home against Fulham. If we have to go defensive and take the point ... fine, but surely we need to go for 3 points.

I've never ever felt safe defending a point.

Thing is, Fulham are likely to take a similarly defensive approach, given their position and being away from home. We don't want to waste half the game cagily standing off each other.

Offence is our strongest suit. We probably want to be exerting pressure for as much time as possible, in order to create the chances to score at least a couple of goals.

I agree, we have to be careful about over-committing, leaving ourselves open to breakaway counterattacks. But the more we score, the less of a problem that would be, anyway. Plus three points on the board for us at this stage is vital*, especially in picking up the momentum after a long international break.

* Getting on for a quarter of the job done after just six games would be a fantastic start. In the 38-game era (since 1994-95), only three times have teams been relegated with 40 or more points, the most recent 24 years ago.

Certainly do not want to concede early again and forced to play catch-up. Work our way into the game steadily is a good approach.

Agreed.

The trap so many relegated clubs fall into is trying to be tight, shutting up shop, and then finding that goals, confidence and three points get increasingly hard to find. Drawing your home games leaves you rock bottom.

We’ve got to be targeting winning our home games against bottom half teams. We have a fully fit squad so we need to maintain, or even extend, the buffer between us and the bottom 3 before the injuries inevitably weaken us.

A draw wouldn’t be a disaster but it would be slightly disappointing.

Plus we spent all that money on the midfield base and attacking players, seems silly not to make maximum use of the investment.

We need 40 point-ish. If we're going into Fulham at home not to lose then really we are going down.

We have to go for 3 points and i'm sure we will.

A point would be better than a loss of course. But the first objective is to win. We can’t keep finding a reason why we shouldn’t be winning. If we accept the argument on here that the top sides won’t define our season, at some point there have to be games where we need to win to boost our survival chances. Any home game against around ten sides, Fulham being one of them, ticks that box.

We’ve spent close to £200M on players and brought in a manager with the sole of aim of keeping us up. This is a game we ought to be disappointed if we don’t win.

Probably one of the main things I prefer about the PL is just how much jeopardy you get in each game. This one feels really really big, and we're only a few games in. And I mean that in a positive way; football should be about each game feeling like it has genuine value and meaning.

This one of those games where it will be difficult to not get too high if we win and too low if we lose. Personally, if we're going to survive these are the sort of games we should attack, but we need to be smart with game management.

Really looking forward to this one.

Yep have to be positive about this one.
Will be a tough game like all of them but at home got to take it to them

Feel this is going to be a really good litmus test for where we are.
The two Fulham games stick front of memory from the last prem season. Firstly the gap in physically and competitiveness from a pace power perspective. And then in the away game where we couldn’t control the game and finish it off from a good position. So will be interesting to see how it feels after today’s game by comparison.

We might as well give up now if we're not capable of going into a home game with Fulham looking to win. The home games against the bottom half of the league are our best chance of getting enough points to stay up.

The first objective should be to win. I'm sure the manager and players will agree with this.
