| Ipswich losing out on city of culture 08:44 - Oct 22 with 6054 views | Mullet | https://www.ipswich.co.uk/ipsw Given the club are now in the Prem (for however long that might be) how do you locals feel about missing out? It’s a great way to boost the coffers and local economy and seems a bitter blow for the town and Suffolk generally. Ashton being praised and then blamed here doesn’t reflect well either does it? | |

| Ipswich losing out on city of culture on 08:55 - Oct 22 with 3288 views | RetroBlue | For me, there's long been a problem with the local council's ability to put together a decent business plan to request any funding . We had a consultant ( very experienced national Urban regeneration or suck like ) join the council a few years ago to help guide the town centre re development. They left after 12 weeks stating their skills were not being fully utilised and therefore couldn't work with the council due to the petty infighting. I hate to say it , but historically, the city of norwich has a far better ability to secure funding , I suspect on the back of much better / savvy business acumen. Ipswich council couldn't organise the proverbial pee up in a brewery ... | |

| Ipswich losing out on city of culture on 09:08 - Oct 22 with 3226 views | Dubtractor | Its a big loss tbh. The entertainment/culture offer in the town is light years ahead of where it was a decade ago, but this could have been a huge help to step it up a bit more. Ultimately, to keep the entertainment stuff improving needs money. | |

| Ipswich losing out on city of culture on 10:01 - Oct 22 with 2971 views | ITFC_Essex | As an outsider, who comes into Ipswich for gigs, and visits the Town on matchdays (and when we're celebrating), the one thing I have noticed is Ipswich's overall deterioration, the Town Centre gives Peterborough a run for its money in terms of looking like it's dying off and in places quite filthy, litter ridden and graffitied. In terms of the wider Town, going back 20 years, although Ipswich always had a few "rough spots" it was cleaner, safer and generally a nicer place to be/visit. After dark, certain areas of Ipswich are now very dodgy, you see a lot of crime/drug use just happily happening. No one seems to care, and thats sad. On top of that, the traffic system in places isn't fit for purpose, large spaces are now massively overdeveloped, even a lot of historic buildings and churches have been left to sort of rot, which doesn't scream culture, it screams dump town. I'd say, if I were from Ipswich, i'd worry a lot more about that, and would be expecting my local Councils and MPs to be a lot more concerned about what Ipswich has become (and becoming) than losing the City of Culture thing, and if they aren't there lies to real problem. But if you are happy living like that, fair enough, but most people will simply avoid it rather than go there, which effects the local economy, which is what is happening already. On the upside, I went to Haverhill this week and thats still worse than Ipswich in every way. I went to park up only to find a burned out car casually left there, no police tape, it's safe to say I parked at Tesco instead. [Post edited 22 Oct 10:02]

I do wonder if you have understood what has happened to local government financing over the last 15 years or so, let alone what happened to town centre retail across the country. These things are not unique to Ipswich and I still find the idea that large parts of central Ipswich are unsafe after dark at odds with what I've seen whenever I've been in the town in the late evenings.

Yeah - your first paragraph is spot on. Many towns up and down the country are struggling in the same way. Anecdotally my fiancee says she doesn't feel safe walking through parts of Ipswich town centre alone any more - during the day at times let alone at night. A feeling she didn't have going back 10 years or so. Several of her friends say the same. But then I don't think that is unique to Ipswich either. [Post edited 22 Oct 10:24]

joined up thinking up there, for roads, funding for public projects, music, arts etc, inspired in large part by having the Uni . The Uni Ipswich, I have read, turned down in the 60's?

Thank you for your honest appraisal. I loved in Ipswich all my life, but have spent some living in other places too. Its not the town it used to be when I was growing up , and its hard to argue against anything you have written. I hate the town councils (whichever party they are from because they are all a complete shyte at sorting things out and managing this towns development. They've historically wasted £m's when they have secured any funding . They really are a shower of excrement .

People I know who have lived in Ipswich all their life no longer feel 100% wandering about in Ipswich night or day. There is an atmosphere which I can't quite put my finger on but it feels edgy. Match days have a much more positive feel with 25k+ around the town spending their hard earned and enjoying themselves. It's weird as within a 15 min drive you are in Woodbridge and that area which seems like a different world again.

That’s certainly a personal objective. Personally I don’t feel that way at all. True I will never be in Town other than for a match day, I mean, why would you? But I’m certainly not put off walking anywhere I fancy going.

Each to their own, I would not recommend wandering about aimlessly on your own at night time is all. As outlined, why would you outside of match day.

Whilst I completely agree with you things are not just like this in Ipswich and only Ipswich. Many towns have had issues over recent years . But My experience of Ipswich, is that we have been as a town centre in decline over 23-4 decades now , nit juts the last 10 -15 years. There's been some serious underfunding and poorly managed funding to this town for years ... and the really sad thing is its the County Town. There's been such poor advertising of the town as a place to visit for years. Ipswich is a medieval, (far older than the much acclaimed "Oldest town in Britain", Colchester), and rich in history. Not that you'd ever know it, and historic areas have been left to decline. eg, The Wolsey Gate is practically falling down. Its a criminal neglect in my book Im afraid.

Struggling to comprehend how dumb this is. You think ipswich is rubbish and simultaneously are pleased that we've missed out on an opportunity to improve it with significant funding.

I agree with you Retro. The town isn't immune from the challenges a lot of towns face in the UK and beyond, but I do think its been mismanaged. Proximity to countryside, beaches, London, as well as the history you allude to, and the sizable population. The modern waterfront area, some really nice green spaces by any standards like Christchurch Park. Ipswich actually has all of this to its advantage, plenty of places don't. If you draw a rectangle from the Northern side of Christchurch Park down to the waterfront, its only about 1 mile as the crow flies, and <0.5 miles across. And half of that is the park. Excluding Christchurch Park you're talking about a square in the region of 0.25 sq. miles from the southern side of the park, down to the waterfront. That needs to be the focus of really strategic town planning and investment. Can't help but think if you draw a box around it and get that bit right, and the rest will come. The future of towns like Ipswich isn't retail, its experiential. Bury has a real cafe culture and its thriving. You hear so many accents on a Saturday from Essex, London, even notherners even who are visiting for day trips and weekends. Its probably never been as reliant on retail as Ipswich, but Ipswich needs to double down on giving people stuff to see and do, not just stuff to buy. It won't ever be a Bath or Cambridge or even Norwich, but when you visit places like that with a buzz, thriving cafes and pubs, tours, activity on the water etc it doesn't half make a big difference.

It is not fear spreading it is my current opinion. I lived bang in town for years and it was not great at times and over more recent times it has not improved. Same can be said for other locations to add balance, this is not an Ipswich centric issue.

Only times I've felt remotely worried at night in Ipswich were when electing to walk up the pitch black footpath between Valley Road and the Grove at 3am sh6tfaced after a night at Liquid. People have become warped by the nonsense pumped online – and I agree, it's not an issue confined to Ipswich. [Post edited 22 Oct 12:44]
