| Cold Weather Jacket 18:14 - Oct 24 with 1228 views | BlueBlueBluex2 | With the weather on the turn and a winter trip to Geneva on the horizon, I’ve been toying with the idea of getting a ‘Rab’ jacket as it looks to be warm enough for the coldest of East Anglian winters and not too bulky to travel in either. Anyone got/had one who can attest to its heat retaining abilities? It’s a bit of wedge to drop on an item of clothing which then turns out to not be up to scratch, hence the ask. | | | | |

For my big coat, I bought a big Helly Hansen parka the other week for about £170. First time wearing it today and it's TOASTY. Seems very good quality as well.

This is it: https://amzn.eu/d/03GvazGS Actually got it for £145 it seems, on a deal. Generally hovers around £170 though.

Personally I went full on ski jacket last year after too many seasons freezing my backside off. Went on Vinted and got an excellent The North Face jacket in very good condition for 140 quid.

| Cold Weather Jacket on 22:40 - Oct 24 with 955 views | wrightsrightglove | A rab will never let you down. I’ve had a range of jackets including more expensive brands like Arcteryx and always come back to a rab. Great pieces of kit | | | |
| Cold Weather Jacket on 22:53 - Oct 24 with 922 views | Swansea_Blue | Rab as a brand is absolutely fine. I’ve a lightweight down about 10 yrs old that’s still like new. But it can be hit and miss: their cheaper lines can be crap. I’ve also got a lightweight waterproof that’s anything but. It seems you get what you pay for with them. Like many of these original outdoor brands, they’ve all branched out into cheap, mass produced consumer lines that use cheaper materials. Their more expensive lines remain excellent. | |

Get the layers sorted. Decent merrino. The rest suddenly becomes a bit less crucial.

| Cold Weather Jacket on 05:18 - Oct 25 with 720 views | Steve_M | The material and weight are as important as the make here. Is it a Microlight? I have one, it is more than warm enough for Geneva, retains heat well without too much bulk. The heavier down jackets are probably excessive for general wear and very warm to move in. Do bear in mind though that down isn’t waterproof and will lose warmth if wet. Most jackets will have some weather proofing but some also incorporate a more water resistant outer layer. | |

You can then use a relatively lightweight jacket. Plus a warm hat, neck tube and gloves. These last three make a huge difference and are easy to pack. Not forgetting a hipflask! | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Any recommendations? I’m hoping on the train to Montreux for the day but I’m struggling for inspiration for Geneva. I’m partial to a beer.

I’m looking at a Neutrino which appears to be a bit bulkier than a Microlight. I had not considered the waterproofing as I stick to my Northface a thin outer cover.

I have a couple of days in Montreux, driven in part by the better half and he desire to see the Xmas market.

As an ex-skier I’ve a tri-layered North Face ski jacket for the worst conditions. For nasty but not too terrible winter weather, my old but fully waterproof thigh length Barbour coat does the job. Roomy enough for layers underneath too.

Just looked it up. It’s nice and the sort of thing I might indulge in next time I do something at a more serious altitude. It will definitely be warm enough for Geneva, might be a bit warm if just for general wear but depends on how you feel the cold.

I went to Blacks in BSE today to try one on and the chap steered me towards a Mountain Equipment which I am now considering - https://www.blacks.co.uk/produ If it keeps me warm watching the boy playing under 13s on a December morning then it’s done its job I guess.
