Broadhead Scores But Burns Injured as Wales Beat Gibraltar

Nathan Broadhead scored but Wes Burns suffered an injury as Wales beat Gibraltar 4-0 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham this evening.

Both Town players started and won their sixth full caps but Burns, playing in his right-sided role rather than on the left as was the previously the case with Wales, lasted only 15 minutes, walking off using his shirt as a sling on his left arm after falling awkwardly having won a header.

It’s the second time in two months that Burns, 28, has suffered an injury while away with Wales, the wideman having pulled his hamstring in the 0-0 friendly draw with South Korea in Cardiff.

Broadhead, 25, netted Wales’ third goal in the 35th minute, his second international goal, having assisted Ben Davies’s opener on 22 with a corner whipped over from the left. The forward played the full 90 minutes.

Former Blues striker Kieffer Moore scored the second and fourth goals with the Welsh unable to add to their goals in the second half.

Ex-Town academy full-back Kian Ronan, now with King’s Lynn, played the full 90 minutes for Gibraltar.

Wales are in more significant action in a Euro 24 qualifier against Croatia at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday.

Meanwhile, young Blues keeper Woody Williamson won his third Scotland U19s cap as his side was beaten 2-0 by the Republic of Ireland at the Pinatar Arena in Murcia, Spain this afternoon.

Gibraltar??!! They registered 1 attempt at goal in 90 minutes vs Wales 27. The Welsh coaching staff must have learnt so much about their squad!

Agree football is for everyone. Bit of a stretch though to pin the planet’s woes on Capitalism. All I know is, it’s capitalism and business investment that’s saved ITFC. If the planet is being messed up it’s by billions too many people be they capitalists, communists, fascists, nationalists, populists, fundamentalists or carrot crunchers sucking up Suffolk air :-)

MK1 added 05:28 - Oct 12 Great to have 2 Ipswich players starting for their Country. Internationals are so important to the players. (Wes will be fine for Rotherham). Nathan had a hell of a game and is showing his skills to the world stage. Fantastic for the lads.

I must be the only one who thought Broadhead was far from his best. We’re used to his silky movement going almost unnoticed. But last night his movement was good at times but overall it was poor and his touch was off. He looked tired and leggy. I think it was a game too far for him in a busy schedule. All that can be easily forgotten because of the moment of sheer magic that was his goal. If he plays in the next Wales match I don’t think he’ll be in the Town side next Friday night. Watching Wales was like watching the Ipswich of old with slow transition and more backward passes than forward. God forbid Page ever becomes Ipswich manager. I hope Wes isn’t too badly injured and makes a speedy recovery.

My main thought with fixtures like this is, where is the benefit of playing Gibraltar for Wales? A friendly should be an opportunity to test and develop partnerships, patterns of play and blood new players so a relatively easy fixture proves nothing in that respect. Greece, Northern Ireland, Finland etc would be much more competitive games that Wales would still expect to do well in. It’s not like they are a practice for now Croatia play etc.
Likewise for Gibraltar playing and getting hammered again doesn’t provide positives, playing teams just above their level will mean that they can take more from a game and hopefully progress to a higher mean of performances which will benefit all as football is for everyone not just for a decent team to batter a smaller nation

I get that players want to represent their countries but club managers and coaches must be on the edge of their seats wondering whose going to make it back unscathed. The same goes for Burgess and Luongo if they end up playing vs England on Friday - we can ill afford those two picking up an injury.

Funny using George Best as an example. He never played in an international tournament because with a couple of exceptions, the players around him weren't good enough, and NI is only a small association. It's the world class players who miss out. For Giggs read Best. Dalglish might struggle today. if we had a GB&NI team and single association through all those decades, would it still be only one World Cup? As I recall Gibraltar's recognition by FIFA and a gleeful Blatter came just after Great Britain had the temerity to field a men's football team in the London Olympics. Scotland and Gareth Bale didn't take part! It's divide and rule and we lap it up. We've been had.

It's happened, lets hope it's not too serious and wish Wes a speedy recovery. I'm sure both he and Broady were proud to play for their country not matter who the opponents were!!
