McKenna On Szmodics and Akpom Injuries

Blues manager Kieran McKenna says Sammie Szmodics suffered a knee problem during this afternoon’s 1-0 home victory over West Brom, which will be investigated, while he is hopeful Chuba Akpom’s issue is just an impact injury.

Szmodics was forced off in the 21st minute having been on the end of a heavy Chris Mepham challenge earlier in the half.

Akpom, who replaced him, was caught by Ousmane Diakite's studs in the follow through after a tackle in the second half and made way on the hour.

“Sammie I’ve not seen downstairs, it was a knock on his knee that he tried to shrug off,” McKenna said.

“That’s probably one of them that can go one way or the other. I imagine we’ll investigate that over the next 24 hours.

“Chuba was a very heavy knock. I haven’t seen the tackle back, a couple of people asked me about it downstairs, but his ankle and shin are in a wee bit of a mess. Hopefully it’s just an impact [injury] and won’t take too long.”

Not convinced with sammie or chuba in the no10 role atm. Nunez needs to be starting games. Taylor surprised everyone with his game today. If he can put a performance like that week in week out then it will be hard to leave him out. We also have to try and get Egeli in the game more. Davis/Philogene partnership good on the left but furnell/egeli partnership not as effective.

With the lack of impact this season from the number 10 position it is almost like a wasted body with they way we play through from the back, not utilised effectively as is. Been crying out for 3 in the middle for a while now, we would dominate teams and have far more control in front of the back line with the 3 there, 2 can sit when under the cosh… although in this league that should be a rare thing. Referee gave our players zero protection this game, he needs his eyes testing, missed 2 what looked like hand balls, a blatant shove on Jaden in the box and twice had players leaving studs on our guys and no cards nor even fouls given as a result of it. Bad game from that ref.

55015Deltic added 19:31 - Oct 25 Love Akpom, causes havoc for the opposition and defends well on corners. Real warrior. Won us numerous advantages and corners (although we are poor at set pieces). Once he scores, expect more....

ITFC_Singapore added 20:23 - Oct 25 Completely agree Deltic. I think it's gone under the radar just how good Akpom has looked when he's been on the pitch. I'd love to see him get given a go in the 9 position.

BlueArmy999 added 08:28 - Oct 26 Chuba stepped up a bit against Charlton and again yesterday, he drops in deep and carry’s the ball and can pick out a pass, been more impressed with him than Szmodics so far. However Nunez occupying that 10 role with Cajuse/Taylor & Matusiwa sitting behind and supporting is a sight to behold. Nunez offers us that bit more. Hope he plays him there next week
