Greaves: Jaden's on Fire!
Sunday, 11th Jan 2026 10:32 by Kallum Brisset

Town defender Jacob Greaves has admitted having teammate Jaden Philogene in form and firing is a nice luxury to have.

The pair were the two goalscorers as the Blues booked their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over Blackpool at Portman Road on Saturday.

Defeating the Tangerines continued Town’s positive momentum with a fifth straight win on home soil and marked the 200th match under manager Kieran McKenna, who has guided the Blues into round four of the world’s oldest cup competition for a fourth successive season.

While the late goal from Greaves was a characteristic header from a set piece, Philogene’s trademark opener was just as on brand when he finished off a smart team move 10 minutes before half-time.

His first-time effort with his right foot found the corner of Bailey Peacock-Farrell’s net as the winger reached double-figures for the campaign in all competitions.

Following his goals against Stoke City, Sheffield Wednesday and Oxford United, Philogene has now scored in each of his last four matches at Portman Road.

“He’s on fire,” Greaves said of his former Hull City teammate. “He’s a really good person to have in the squad. The weight of pass from Johnno [Ben Johnson] was exceptional, he knows what Jaden wants and his finish was top, top quality.

“He’s got moments like that where you think individual brilliance. In the game, even some of the little skills he’s doing, at times it was frustrating me because you think he’s taking the mick but I just think that’s just the way he plays.

“It’s been a real positive to this season, and I think he wouldn’t have been as good as he has been if he didn’t have Jack [Clarke] playing when he plays showing how good he is.

“Those two are keeping each other on their toes and it’s a really good battle to watch because them two are unbelievable at their craft.”

One interesting quirk of Philogene’s fine form so far this season is that all 10 of his goals have come at home.

Greaves joked that he will remind Town’s top goalscorer that he needs to start scoring when the Blues are on their travels.

He said: “That’s what I’ll be telling him on Monday, any danger of you scoring away from home?

“This is sometimes like his playground in the way that he comes out and performs. He feels the love and long may it continue.”

Loving the comment about Jack Clarke, he looked good in the ten yesterday

I’m hoping McKenna has seen how good that centre back pairing of Greaves and Kipre is. Both players were playing on their strong sides and both were extremely effective albeit we played a lesser opposition. Kipre and Greaves both moved the ball so much quicker and looked comfortable in possession. I’d like to think McKenna has a selection problem now but I’m sure he will revert back to his usual pairing.
Clarke also did well in the 10 and again this could be good for the team with Szmodics clearly on his way out.
A quality midfielder has to be on McKenna’s mind to play with Matusiwa who has been outstanding

Agreed Mariner, although I also like Greaves in the 3 as cover for Lief, I was also impressed with Johnson yesterday, as a utility option I think we should hod onto him, as Young is definitely slowing up

Rumour Josh Sargent in Town for Talks? US International wants to play in World Cup not for Div 1 team?

I doubt narwich will be selling anymore of their better players to us again. So think we can forget Sargent....hes also very injury prone.

JG is too good a footballer to be continually sitting on the bench. As far as I'm concerned he should either be one of the central defenders along with Kipre, or our regular left back, and yes I did say that. First rule of a left back is to be able to defend, nothing more to add on that.

As for JP being " on fire ", no escaping that fact at PR. Unfortunately it's barely a puff of smoke away from it.

IACC59 I've said before that Leif is a £5m LB but a £20m+ LWB. I'd be tempted to try a back 3 and push Davis further up. He'd make a great left winger with some defensive duties. Jaden plays better just inside. Jack Clarke scored some 20+ goals for Sun'land playing as a left winger, so maybe there should be some competition/rotation between Davis and Clarke. Imagine Davis LW and Burns RW supplying Callum Wilson.

The great thing about Jaden is everyone knows what he's going to do, but it takes 3 players to stop him, and even then he's probably going to get a shot off. Opens up so much space for others.

I think from what we have seen this season, Jaden is a much better player than Omari.

If we got 37 million for Omari, pretty sure Jaden is worth at least 45 the way he is playing ;)

On a serious note though, the guy has so much confidence and sometimes borderline arrogance when on the ball. But he backs it up and he creates these chances by taking risks. If only he had scored from that shot where he lost control of the ball, lifted it into the air and then volleyed!

Would be hilarious if we did sign Sargent. A very good championship striker, but not convinced he's good enough for the premier league.

Edmundo, a chip off the Arjen Robben block who of course remains the best ever exponent of it even now, and did it a higher level and away from home too. If JP can actually do that, then my we have something on our hands.

churchmans, hope all is well with you. I take it you've spontaneously combusted about something, though what I don't know.
