Taylor Returns From Cheltenham Loan
Monday, 12th Jan 2026 12:40

Town U21s skipper Tommy Taylor has returned to the Blues from his loan spell with League Two Cheltenham with manager Steve Cotterill feeling the forward needs to go to a club where he is going to play more regularly.

The 20-year-old made three starts for the Robins - one in the league - and 13 sub appearances having joined them in August, scoring once in the Vertu Trophy.

“I had a great chat with Tommy,” Cotterill told GloucestershireLive. “He understands it and he’s a great lad, who I really like.

‌“I mentioned it in the dressing room and the lads gave him a big clap and thanked him for what he’s done because he’s had 11 or 12 appearances here, which is quite good really.

“He’s always thankful and I don’t think he’ll forget his time at Cheltenham. He had his first EFL game and his first senior goal, so we have played a small part in his development.

‌“I don’t think he’ll forget us and we certainly won’t forget him. He now needs to churn out 20 games somewhere.”

Fellow Blues youngster, central defender Jacob Mazionis, returned to Portman Road earlier in the month after an injury hit spell.

Further proof that the quality of our academy players needs to improve. When you go out on loan to lower league clubs you need to impress if you have any chance of making it at first team level. I can remember when we were producing players that went on to play for England.

Linkboy13, you must be of my generation, so do I, and I had the pleasure of watching quite a lot of them coming through when youth team games actually used to be played at PR. I enjoyed those almost as much as first team games. We seriously took our eyes off the ball. It's a long way back but It's happening, might be a few years yet before we see another academy product pull on an England shirt!

Linkboy13, yes indeed, almost any article unrelated to the first team or players thereof, generally gets few posts. I guess it is what it is. I suspect if/when our academy does return to former glories, the interest will mysteriously pick up!

Agree - we have a long way to go. But at least some of the lads are getting league loans. For awhile there, it was Conference at best.

Cotterill showing a lot of class here, and in a previous interview. Fact is the kid wasn't good enough to make the bench most match days, but Cotterill saying nothing but positives.
