Greaves: I'm Just Trying to Do the Best I Can
Wednesday, 14th Jan 2026 13:29 by Kallum Brisset

Town defender Jacob Greaves says he is ready to rise to the challenge of regaining his place in the Blues’ starting XI.

Having initially begun the season as the preferred centre-back partner to captain Dara O’Shea, the improved form of Reims loanee Cédric Kipré has meant Greaves has had to bide his time on the sidelines.

Kipré has started each of the last nine Championship matches, during which Town have won five and kept five clean sheets to move to within two points of the automatic promotion places.

Greaves admitted he has no complaints over Kieran McKenna’s selection, but stressed he is not content with sitting on the bench.

“When Cédric’s played, he’s been one of our best players,” he said. “I think he’s been really good, but obviously I want to play and any player wants to play.

“When I’ve had the opportunities to come in and play, I feel like I’ve done well in the games that I’ve done.

“I’m just trying to do the best that I can, look after myself, keep working, keep my head down and hopefully get a bit of payback for when my time does come.

“You want to be playing, but I know that going to the gaffer and asking why am I not playing is not going to do anything for me. He picks the team and it is what it is.

“I’ve just got to show in training and games why I’m good enough to play, and why when I do play, I can put in good performances.

“Ultimately, at the end of the day, it’s the gaffer’s decision and you’ve got to respect it and try and show a performance when you get the chance.”

Last Saturday’s FA Cup victory over League One side Blackpool was an opportunity to freshen things up, with McKenna making seven changes to his starting line-up.

As one of those to return to the side, Greaves was widely viewed as the strongest performer with two important blocks preceding a late headed goal at the other end, his second of the campaign.

That appearance followed up another positive display against league leaders Coventry City, where the 25-year-old was deployed in a less familiar left-back role in the absence of Leif Davis.

Greaves said: “I had a nice opportunity against Coventry and the opportunity to play [against Blackpool]. I want to play all the time, that’s just who I am. I feel like I can play week in, week out and get a rhythm from there.

“If the opportunity comes to play in these competitions and I play, then I’ve got to put in a performance like I did to show the gaffer that I'm more than ready.

“It was a bit easier on my legs, but I quite like playing out there [at left-back] as well. The Coventry game, the connection I have with Jack [Clarke] on the field and off the field is a good one, so I was really excited for the game.

“Coming in, I knew that we were going to do well and it was probably one of my most enjoyable games that I’ve had for this club.

“I really enjoyed it, I thought the lads were terrific in the game. To go and beat them so comfortably away from home was a really enjoyable one and it’s one that we can really build on.”

Greaves is in his second season at Portman Road and first back at Championship level after last season’s difficult year in the Premier League.

The former Hull City defender, who was named in the Team of the Season in his most recent year at second-tier level, says the Blues are well placed and well in the mix for an immediate return to the top flight.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “When I have played, I’ve loved it. When I’ve not played, I’ve not really loved it as much but that’s just part and parcel of the job.

“The squad we’ve got, coming in every day with these guys is top, I really do enjoy it and that makes it miles better.

“The league this season, you can see how it is when teams come here and sit in low blocks and it’s tough. We’ve just got to keep the support, keep going and hopefully we can get what we want at the end of the season.

“I think we’re in a good position and the squad that we’ve got is ready to kick on. Over the Christmas period, we had an unbelievable return of points, so I think that’s what we’ve got to build on now and keep churning out results.

“Sometimes it’s not been pretty, you look at the game against Oxford, 2-1 and it wasn’t the prettiest game but we got three points. That’s what we’ve got to keep doing and keep digging in.

“When lads get other opportunities to play, they’ve got to show that they’re good enough to play as well.

“We’re in a really good position. We’d probably have wanted a few more points, but we can’t be too greedy. We’ve got an exciting second half of the season now and I can’t wait for it.”

An expensive signing but seems to be improving!

Speaks incredibly well. Was disappointing to hear some murmurs from around me on Saturday, slating him from minute 1 before he'd even done anything. He shut them up by the end - a top tier performance.

Big JG fan. Came in for a hefty fee whilst making the jump from Champ to Prem and had an indifferent start to life at the club in a struggling team. No doubt for me about his quality though and potential to become an established and reliable premier league defender soon enough. Got all the attributes required

I thought he was superb away at Coventry at LB. Solid defensively, got forward surprisingly well and was unlucky not to score on more than one occasion. He may not be as offensive as Leif, but played his part in a team that gave the leading league scorers virtually no sniff at goal. He can't have much more to be a regular starter surely?

Unlike Greaves he looks really comfortable on the ball.

Massive potential in this lad, and ALL the lads we've been signing last 18 months.

We simply can afford to sign players like Semenyo, and therefore we invest in the future rather than the immediate present. I think a lot of Town fans forget this simple fact and expect miracles from day 1

I too liked him at LB, it's good to have some cover there

I feel that O'Shea seems to play better when he is alongside Kipre, but I thought that Greaves did really well at left back.

He just doesn't seem to play that well alongside oshea

I think greaves is a much better defender than Davi’s just my opinion it free up the left side going forward

How about Kipre and Greaves? O'Shea hasn't been convincing this season and there are other players who can captain.

I really liked Greaves at LB vs Coventry, and he was very good vs Blackpool as well. I just wish we could accommodate both Leif and Greaves in the same team (still keeping our usual centre backs) but I don't know how this could be done. Could we move Leif forward into a more midfield role?

I just hope Jacob sees himself as an integral part pf a squad. Because that's what he is. Yes he may have had a few sticky games but the last few he has played in whether in for Leif of Kipre he has been great. The display of him and Furlong against Coventry was one of the main reasons for our success.
The main problem as was found by Woolfy is that whereas the forward line in the number 9 position is far from satisfactory the defence is in excellent shape so you have more than enough fighting for defensive places and although you have a similar amount for the forward places they aren't as consistent. In fact they are similar to the defence in that you have two excellent players in Philogene and Clarke fighting for that position and then you get to the nitty gritty of the number 9 and to a slightly lesser extent the number 10 if you use Nunez where there's no real fight for places as Hirst has the 9 because nobody else is good enough and he's not prolific either. Sort the 9 out and either another 10 so that Nunez can move back or a stand in for Matisuwa.

Excellent player, shame we can't fit them all in

Excellent when he's been at left back...uses his size to scare the opposition when he gets forward which has surprisingly been quite often.

Just a pity we can't get him at LB with leif ahead. Leif is fantastic bombing forward but leaves the team exposed against the better sides.

Two posters I totally agree with there. Better defender than LD without the slightest question. LD still has the edge on the over/under lapping and probably still crossing ability. The Plusses for JG are better in the air at the back and on set pieces up front, and more comfortable on the ball. I make that at least a draw, with JG having the scope to improve further if he gets more chances at LB. However I would have him at LCB alongside Kipre anyway. Any chance of KM " resting " the captain? Somehow I doubt it. A really good footballer with still more scope to improve. and should be a regular starter in the side somewhere.

Armchair Critic so would I . Kipre is not a left sided player and although he’s performed well on the left he looked far more comfortable on the right and he is much better in possession than O’Shea who is ponderous at best. O’Shea isn’t a strong enough leader either so I think McKenna has some serious thinking to do. Greaves and Kipre our best central defenders and best partnership imo. Greaves is excellent cover for Davis but can’t see him taking over the left back position. It may go unnoticed but Greaves is a huge threat from set pieces as he is superb aerially

Would play him at number Nine, if not going to use him at left back.

Marinersnose, I coudn't have put it better myself. Rather like the old saying and bit of a cliche, but non the less true, " There is non so blind as those who will not see " .

After his display against Coventry at LB and sat with some crucial blocks at CB he has to count himself very unlucky not to be starting games imo. However Kipre has been immense, personally I would prefer to see Greaves in CB than O’Shea and give the armband to Mutiswa. Greaves when at LB gives us so much more solidarity but does not have the creativity Davis has going forward I guess. It’s a bit like Philogene and Clarke, it’s mad they don’t both start but they play the same position (same as Kipre and Graves).

Jacob played a magnificent game against Coventry playing at left back. Then another 10/10 performance against Blackpool. Thank you for being so patient. You are so valued!

It must be so frustrating for Greaves to have to watch on from the bench every match and watch O’Shea struggle on the ball in possession match after match like the fans do, and know that he won’t get to play ahead of O’Shea because he’s the captain and KM won’t drop him. I’d love to see Kipre at right centre half and Greaves as left centre half. But I think Greaves will likely only be used when Davis or Kipre are injured.

Agree @Marinersnose. Our best center defensive unit - Kipre and Greaves - by a mile. O'Shea is mistake-prone, one of weak links this year and not captain material (Matusiwa should be the cap).

Good to see a few of us are singing from the same song sheet. However I fear KM is singing from a different one, so we are probably not going to get our way.
