McKenna: Szmodics Exit in Best Interests of Group Dynamic
Friday, 6th Feb 2026 10:03

Town boss Kieran McKenna says the decision to allow Sammie Szmodics to move out on loan to Derby County on deadline day was not a footballing decision but was “in the best interests of our group dynamic”.

McKenna said at the end of last week that if no one came in with an acceptable fee, then the Irish international would remain at the club.

However, in the closing minutes of the final day of the window, the club relented and Szmodics was allowed to join the Rams for the rest of the season.

Asked whether Szmodics, who has two years on his contract, might still have a role to play at the club going forward, McKenna said: “We’ll see what the summer brings.”

Pushed on why Szmodics, who two years ago bagged 27 goals for Blackburn as he picked up the Golden Boot, a campaign which led to his £9 million switch to the Blues, was ultimately loaned to another club in the promotion hunt, McKenna added: “It’s clear from a football perspective where Sammie is at and what he has done.

“He had a really positive first half of the season in the Premier League with us and scored some important goals. On four goals by Christmas, he showed his strength, especially in a team - as we were then - who can play in a more counter-attacking manner and attacking big spaces a lot.

“We really missed him in the second half of the season. He’s had two big injuries in the calendar year, both with complicated recoveries that have held him back a little bit. There is obvious football things there.

“But in the end, it wasn’t a football decision, it wasn’t related to his football performance. It was a decision that was made in the best interests of our group dynamic, our dressing room culture, of the values of our dressing room and our team.

“And in those respects, the decision was made that it was best that Sammie wouldn’t be with us for the rest if the season.

“Of course, there was a possibility of that being on a permanent transfer. But when there wasn't a suitable offer, it was still considered to be the best case in those categories that I have just spoke about for him not to be here this season.

“And that’s all I am going to say on it really. I know it’s difficult for supporters when you can’t always give them the full picture and I understand that. A player going on loan to a team that is going well, I understand the perception of that.

“But in the end, the people at the top end of the club and my responsibility is to do what is right for the people at the football club. And I've done that since I've been here and I will continue to do that - and that was the basis of this decision.”

Before signing him from Blackburn he refused to play for them … understandable in some respects. We dont know what goes on in training or whaat gets said, we don’t need bad apples in the group we need an unwavering commitment by everyone to give their all for the club and back other players when they aren’t in the team

Sounds like he told KM a few home truths that we need a striker. KM flipped as he is so used to people licking hi a@se he couldn’t take it.

Good point BlueArmy999 - I remember some of our fans commenting that this wasn't impressive from him.

Pretty disgusting treatment to a player that has been shafted by Mckenna & co. Never played in the right position. Finally being utilised by Mckenna to chuck him under the bus and deflect attention from the fact that with or without Szmodics we are as spineless as we were last year when we stank up the Prem for a season

Dear o dear. Some utterly ridiculous assumptions being made in here that it must be KmcK's fault and he has a big ego etc etc. That's set against Szmodics's antics at Blackburn. If you want to jump to conclusions without knowing the facts, at least choose the more plausible one.

A sad situation all round, I was very excited when Sammie signed for Town and then scored against Man City & Spurs. But it sounds like this move is best for all parties, although might not be as bad as some are making out, pretending to be ITK. After all he wished Town well on Insta and urged his former team mates to go & get that promotion.

Bazza8564 I suspect I have heard the same as you, and from a very reliable source. Wouldn’t be appropriate to reveal it as I’m not absolutely certain of the validity but if it is true, then it’s the correct decision to banish him from the club.

Personally, I think the club have dealt with the situation well and I also agree with Kieran making it fairly clear to supporters what has happened but without giving the full details as that wouldn’t help anyone. Time to move on - with Nunez and Mehmeti we have plenty of quality at 10 anyway.

Strange

But then he forced the hand of Estuce at Blackburn to come here and I heard the same when he wanted to leave Peterborough.

Akpom and Azon just keep trying………..Johnson toys are still in the pram

Fair to say we won’t be seeing him in a Town shirt again.
What astounds me is the folk on here, whether in full knowledge of the facts or not, are out on McKenna’s case as soon as the story breaks.
Criticism is part and parcel of his position but it’s the same old usual suspects who spout their utter distaste of him on any given subject.
Change the record, guys.

The manager and club have made their decision. No one is bigger than the club. Whatever the reasons behind it all, he is now on loan. We move on as a club, fans and players.

Now go thump derby like we did Coventry.

Like most I’d heard the rumours and didn’t buy the idea he was ill for that long without the club saying what he had. KM hasn’t harmed SS’s transfer value, football is a small world and I doubt any club looking to buy him wouldn’t know what ever has led to this. People talk and clubs do their research on player behaviour. He doesn’t suit how we play and it seems doesn’t have a positive effect on the team off the pitch. We have multiple better no10s. As has been said, for McKenna to say anything, knowing how reserved he is on stuff like this… it must have been pretty bad.

Just remember how long it took to get him in the door, he went on strike to seal his deal, similar to Omari who got huge pelters and still is.
So his character surfaced at Blackburn, the Xmas illness that lasted over 2 weeks sealed it for me, along with admission that he knew about Derbys interest a few weeks ago.
Add those facts up and McK making these comments, which is a first ,tells me he will and should never play for ITFC again.

Never did it for us. If I'd have been him, poorly performing since he's been here, I'd have kept my head down . Obviously thought he was too good for us and we don't want characters like that.

Another player MA sh1t the bed and overpaid for. Ogbene too. We will be lucky to get £6m combined for them at end of season.

Don't worry Kieran, I think many of us have worked it all out. One bad apple and all that. Best for both parties.

Agree with Bazza, McKenna is an excellent diplomat and as most of us are unaware of the full picture should respect his judgment.

Regretfully his style of play never suited our game plan and in my opinion was a panic buy.

The dynamic of the Dressing Room is important so KM would want to protect it. Sadly I'm not so sure that the dynamic is the same as two or three seasons ago when the Band of Brothers were well supported by Morsy and others no longer with us.

I certainly feel one or two of the present Squad earning big money are not busting a gut for the cause!

darkhorse28, you quite often make some decent points in your posts, but it's crystal clear you dislike KM and MA, fair enough, everyone's entitled to an opinion. Are both perfect? No, but then neither am I, or you. Maybe it's time to sing another song.

Wanted SS since his Colchester days. He didn't want to come here initial and I was surprised and pleased when he forced the move to us. Things have clearly not gone as well as hoped so best off for both parties to move on. We save some wages and possibly get a fee at the end of the season. Hopefully he scores a few for them but not enough to jepodise our play off hopes.

Need someone else to step up now if they get regular game time because of this move.

I always felt Sammie was full of huff and puff - but ultimately wasn’t very effective or even very good for us.

But if Kieran is saying this, bear in mind the diplomatic genius Kieran has, Sammie has clearly absolutely and royally F’d something up. Which means he’s compromised our season. Which means he has a massive blemish on my view of him.

It's a shame as I like Sammie and feel we needed a 27 goal scorer but I also respect KM's handling of the situation...and so we move on. Let's hope we put in a winning display at Derby as our bubble has been burst in the last 2 matches and we desperately need a win now....

I'm not a huge McKenna fan but I'm happy to be guided by those on here who are much better informed than me.
Even KM sceoptics like me can see he is a good egg who needed this like a hole in the head. SS has gone and we move on.
Hopefully we beat Derby but if we don't I just hope nobody is stupid enough to reference the SS departure similarly if we miss out on promotion niobody should be claiming that losing SS played any part in that outcome
