Davis: Kasey's Worked So Hard
Sunday, 8th Feb 2026 10:23 by Kallum Brisset

Leif Davis has backed Town teammate Kasey McAteer to have an important role to play between now and the end of the season.

McAteer has only started eight matches for the Blues since arriving from Championship rivals Leicester City in August, and made his second league appearance of the calendar year off the bench in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Derby County at Pride Park.

It was an impactful one, with the winger claiming his first assist for the club as Town struck a second-half winner in front of the travelling supporters to move back to within four points of the top two.

After Anis Mehmeti had done well to maintain possession, McAteer’s overlapping run created the chance and his excellent clipped cross was inch-perfect for Davis to head into the far corner.

The Blues goalscorer could not hide his delight for McAteer, who had made a slow start to life at Portman Road.

“Kasey’s worked his arse off, he’s worked so hard,” Davis said. “He knows his qualities, we know his qualities and that’s why he’s here.

“The stuff that he brings is what we need off the bench or even from the start of the game.

“He’s a quick, powerful lad. He’s very direct, he’s a good athlete and that’s what the team needs for people to come off the bench like him to get that moment, and he took it.

“In the last game at home, he came on and he worked his socks off as well. He looked like himself in that game, pressing the ball, being with everyone in position.

“I’m buzzing for him because he’s worked hard in training, got his head down. He knows what he’s got to do to try and get into the team.”

It was a superb cross. Pinpointed too perfection.

Signs of encouragement all round for Kasey, I've not been convinced at all but this could now be a turning point for him.
Well done and hope the goals come for you asap.

A quality cross, hopefully this will be the turning point, and he can kick on from here

I ate some humble pie as that cross came over. Sport often about confidence and little moments that spark momentum. Let's get behind McAteer (me included) and see what he can do. I still don't think we'd have spent £12m on a complete punt in the dark so there is a talented player in there somewhere. Hopefully this is the start of us seeing his best. COYB

It’s almost like KMK and MA knew what they were doing when they bought him, amazing.

I would imagine that working with Wes Burns every day in training is just what McAteer needs: if some of Wes's qualities can rub off on him, he could be quite a player. (Fingers crossed!)

It was an excellent ball. No question. But some comments about how he’s proved everyone wrong and how MA and KM knew what they were doing is ridiculous and premature. It’s ONE good cross. He needs to perform consistently well and to date hasn’t done so sadly.

Im not one for slagging off players i leave that to the numpty heads on here so when a player does well after receiving abuse it gives me great pleasure so well done Kasey let's hope that's the start of something good for the future. The only time i might criticise is when a player is not giving any effort.

So pleased for Kasey to get an assist. Hope he gets a decent run in the team to show what he can do. Has taken a lot of unwarranted criticism.

Jas0999 its almost as if there was some unrecognised irony in Independently’s comment!
Give the KMc,MA and McAteer some credit!

jas0999, I've been one of Kasey's big supporters on here, in the face of a little hostility at times. I know what this guy can bring to the party. You are of course correct in that he now needs to do it regularly. He certainly couldn't before, having only started 8 games and up till yesterday, played only 50 minutes since December 29th. Very difficult to do anything at all under those circumstances. Let's just get behind him, and everyone else for that matter. WB has been a fantastic player for the club, many wide men could learn something about keeping it simple from him. However I expect even he would admit he isn't the medium to long term wide right player solution at the club. KM is 7 years younger. Maybe KM can be? We will find out if he gets more regular game time, and only then.

This cross could be the belated start to his ITFC career. Some players take time to settle in and perform to a certain level. This will give him more confidence so in turn will help the team. The pieces of the jigsaw are beginning to fall into place.

This time last year certain people on here were giving Jaden and Clarke the same sort of abuse that McAteer has been getting . Sometimes players hit the ground running like Mehmeti and Nunez , other times it takes a while . As long as they give 100% we should be supporting them .

Dozzells Bobblehat, my sentiments exactly. 100% is what I ask for, difficult to do more than that.

Fabulous to read these comments and so great to read his colleagues championing him too.

Armchaircritic and I have been championing his cause for a while now, but there are no "i told you so's", its simply fantastic to hear the town fans now stepping up and acknowledging the lad

Lets not forget Mehmeti's sublime vision and weighted pass to McAteer before as well as McAteers perfect cross for LD. Always takes time for people to settle, but MA & KM know what they have and how to get the best. Just takes a bit of time to build those connections.

Football supporters can be really stupid at times, why would anyone believe abuse is ok and is going to help the player and team?
I remember years ago Jason Dozzell, being booed by town fans( loose description) every time he touched the ball, Dozzell widely regarded as a town legend these days. No player if giving 100% should receive any abuse whilst in a town shirt. Yes they get paid outrageous amounts of money but no excuse for abuse! In life some people need a cuddle some need a kick!
Still think he will become a good player for us, but needs to feel the love! Just my thoughts!

Jas0999. But it isnt just 1 good cross. Hes put several good crosses in. Not his fault if no1s got on the end of them, is it? Ues, he still needs to do more but as others say, u need to be confident to really perform. Pretty sure if you had some1 at ur job constantly slagging you off u wouldnt be doing ur job perfectly neither. Have to remember, hes a human too. And some of tge abuse hes had to put up with, both in the ground, and on here and other social media, is pathetic. Hopefully now tho, everyone will get behind him. And any other player, who may just be lacking in confidence right now

If Kasey McAteer reads this forum then he needs better guidance from the people around him. I come on here most days and read as many comments as time allows. Some days I post and some days I don't. I can honestly say I've never seen one single comment from anyone claiming that McAteer hasn't been putting in enough effort. If anyone has and I've missed it then fair enough. For my part my complaints about McAteer has been around the collective failures of a number of the new forwards to contribute goals and assists. Some agree and some think forwards don't need to score goals as long as they try hard. Both views are welcome here.

Slightly off topic I know but has anyone else noticed Mehmeti's little excited jump for joy when his pass to McAteer comes off in the clip above?
Love it.

I must hold my hands up and confess that I had written off Jack Taylor a few months back, and questioned why he had been handed a new contract. Now I buy into the confidence the club placed in him. Having been critical of McAteer, I'm fully open to being proved wrong there as well.

Jewell in the town, good to hear, it's easy to make quick assumptions/judgements about someone and not just in football. I like people who are open to be proved wrong about something ( I am too, and I have been on more than occasion! ). As far as football is concerned and in particular ITFC, I just think we need to get behind what we have here at the moment( I was one of those banging on about the need for a striker, no point in throwing toys out of prams ) let's see where it takes us, and just for 3 months all pull together, rather like I got the impression the team and KM were doing on Saturday!
