Johnson: It’s Something I Want to Be a Part Of
Friday, 13th Feb 2026 10:26 by Kallum Brisset

Town defender Ben Johnson says he never considered leaving the Blues despite his reduced minutes at Portman Road this season.

After signing on a free transfer from West Ham United in the summer of 2024, Johnson has failed to nail down a place in Kieran McKenna’s side, starting only 18 of the Blues’ 68 league matches since his arrival at the club and subsequently being linked to Fulham.

The 26-year-old found game time easier to come by in the Premier League, with the full-back being handed just one Championship start since the end of August when filling in for the injured Leif Davis.

While he admits he would have liked more time on the pitch, Johnson is excited by the prospect of adding a promotion onto his CV and that he was never looking for a move away from Suffolk.

“Not at all,” he dismissed. “I feel that being at Ipswich, I really enjoy it. Off the back of a relegation, we’ve still held on to really good players.

“This could be the season that we get promoted and it’s what we want to do, we’re working so hard towards it as much as we can and it’s something I want to be a part of.

“I’ve been blessed enough to win things in my career and if I could get promoted with Ipswich at such a historic club, I’d definitely look back on that with a lot of joy and pride.

“I came back to pre-season wanting to stay and wanting to get Ipswich promoted back to the Premier League.”

Last summer, Ashley Young and Darnell Furlong were signed, the latter of whom has gone on to be a virtual ever-present at right-back.

“That’s the manager’s decision,” Johnson said. “His decision was he felt we needed strength in that position and ultimately that’s his decision.

“I’m here to work hard, train well, be professional, and when I get the opportunity to play, play well and perform.”

Johnson still maintains the belief that he has a big role to play and backs himself to perform whenever he is given the opportunity by McKenna, whether it be from the start or as a substitute.

The versatile wideman has featured predominantly as a left-back this season, but has played as both a right-back and a right winger for Town in the past.

He said: “It’s part of football, really. There’s going to be some seasons where you play regularly, and some seasons where you don’t. That’s probably the state of the season and how the team’s doing, there’s different variables that come into play.

“It’s been a season where I’ve had to be patient and I’ve not played as much as I would like, but I believe that if I come in to play I’ll do a good job and I want to do that if I get the chance to play.

“You see that at every team. I’m not going to be the first player or the last player to go through a spell where you don’t play and then you have a resurgence and you become a mainstay in the team.

“Christian [Walton]’s done that brilliantly, he’s had to be extremely patient with injuries in past seasons. He’s come in, taken his opportunity and done really well.

“You can see why it’s evident that he is one of the best keepers in the league. If I get my chance, I want to take it. I know I can, and if I get the chance to play, I’m going to look forward to it.

“My best position is just playing and enjoying. I’ve played right wing, I’ve played left-back, I’ve played right-back, and in all of those positions I feel like I’ve had good games and I’ve enjoyed playing in those positions and doing slightly different things tactically. I’m just here to enjoy my football, do the best I can and contribute to the team.”

The Blues’ January transfer business saw two new faces join the dressing room in Anis Mehmeti and Dan Neil.

Albania international forward Mehmeti arrived on a permanent deal from Bristol City and has already impressed in his short time at Portman Road, while midfielder Neil was brought in on loan from Sunderland.

“Really good additions as you can see,” Johnson said of his new teammates. “Both of them were very important in the Derby win.

“Anis created the first goal, I know it was an own goal but he put in a really dangerous ball and created a great chance for Wes in the second half.

“Dan came on and controlled the game when we needed it. He came on at a crucial time, controlled the game, and helped us get the win. They’ve been two great additions and they’re going to help us massively in the next few months.

“The manager knew that they were going to do that. We’ve made some good signings, we knew that they’ve got the pedigree for Ipswich Town and the level.

“Anis has performed so well for Bristol City over recent seasons, and Dan captained Sunderland back to the Premier League. To get those players in, we’re fortunate to have them.”

I really like Johnson. I know some people think he struggled when he first arrived but he seems to have worked hard and developed into a good and versatile right sided player. For sure Furlong is the better option at RB, but Johnson is good cover and could play an important role both as a squad player in training (in the sense that good playing /training with good creates better players) and as quality cover on match days when needed.

I know this is harking back a little, but I thought he was MotM when we beat Spurs away. Think he’s a more decent player than some give him credit for. Just not sure what his best position is.

Good PR story, saying all the right things.
Ideal cover at RB, and should play tonight.

I think he is a very good player would be better right wing than some of our options! Technically a much better player than Furlong BUT Furlong brings something different to the party, he ruffles feathers, is the player you detest if an opponent, something Morsy also had...

Furlong fast becoming best right back in the league. Johnson is a better player than some give credit for though. Would love a cup run so some of fringe player is can get games.

Whenever I've met him and got a picture after game, he is always so polite. And he just has such a friendly face. Much like Christian, he is being patient and has a superb attitude.

Mind you, if he didn't, Kieran would have sent him out on loan to Derby!

Hopefully has a good game tonight

Must be hard for a European Trophy winner to drop a division and still not be first choice. But such a superb attitude to be a squad player and remain patient and supportive of team mates ahead of him in the queue.
The fact he was happy to remain & not try to force a move despite rumours of interest from established PL clubs speaks volumes.

I like Johnson, just feel he needs to be more sure of himself as he has good attributes but seems to lack something.

I agree with so many of the comments above. He clearly has a great attitude and is the kind of guy it's good to have around the place to keep standards high. Also agree that we don't quite know what his best position is! I actually think he might have better attacking instincts than defensive ones (you could say the same for Davis), but we've got so many options going forward on the right. Anyway, hope he has a great game tonight.

Notched a great assist and a great headed goal at Stamford Bridge last year. Definitely could be a versatile right winger. Furlong is playing very well so it’s hard to break into the team.

Good on yer, Ben - better player than he is sometimes given credit for.

Sometimes being decent in more than one position can be a curse rather than a blessing, but good to know we have someone like Ben, a proper pro, to come in where and when needed. Like one or two other posters here, I think he's a better player than some realise. Just needs to keep " at it ", you never know when a more regular chance may come.

He wants to be part of getting a salary he couldn’t achieve anywhere else.

There’s zero professional pride or ambition in being second or third choice in an EFL team, at his level of contract.

He has quality, but looks every inch what he likely is. A talented player, not that passionate about the game, who wants to make as much as he can, while he can, hard for us fans to accept, but there’s more players like that than we care to admit.

Fair play. Not his fault. Again. Our ability to scout the right quality, profiles and characters is really poor.

He isn’t defensively good enough, and we have Leif with the role of being great going forward…, so why on earth did we sign him.

Paid a fortune and defensively barely championship level.., genuine quality with the ball, but another woeful talent ID outcome.

We are VERY average at recruitment ..way too many misses and really bad misses like Muric, Johnson, McAteer, Walle, even Jens and Greaves and Phillips, oh and Azon and Akpom .., I’ll stop there .., could list another half dozen easily.

We can’t be succesful long term while Ashton and McKenna head recruitment.., neither have the self awareness to see they aren’t good enough at it.

Not shockingly bad. Some good payers signed.., but light years off good enough to bring regular top flight football .., we’ve regressed with money, which says everything about our issues in talent id.

Same people. Same decisions. We’ll get the same outcomes.

Some of the comments. Nobody want him, at the salary he’s on, nobody at all, no EFL side can afford him, and no prem side will pay his salary, because he’s not at that level.

All the ‘great attitude’ .., he’s paid a large fortune he would struggle to get 50% of elsewhere.

A great attitude would be taking the pay cut to play football because you love the game.

Not his fault. He doesn’t have to live playing more than he loves career security .., but he’s hardly a role model.

No club can afford him. Can’t get a game here. Again. Tells a narrative around our talent ID.., not the sort of passion, desire, commitment you need to be succesful at a club.

Compare and contrast to Morsy, Mass, Chaplin etc

They’d run through walls to play the game .., built different as Warnock would say ‘you don’t care …, youre picking up a wage’

He’s shown SO much desire to make it his shirt .., we signed a 40 year old and an another year ex WBA player ahead of him .., and he’s on a contract more then half the back four combined.

One thing he isn’t is ‘such a brave little soldier’

A poor signing. In any context. And taking resources out of the club for so many poor signings, isn’t ok, it literally determines how successful we will be and what we can and can’t do in the future.

The number of people who can’t conflate Philips, Johnson, Muric. McAteer, Walle, Jens, Greaves. Akpom, Azon etc etc etc to our (lack) of ability to sign a striker, or other key players.

PSR is rolling 3 years .., there are consequences to giving players eye watering salaries to be mile off good enough even in the EFL.

Consequences. Not Johnson’s fault, 100% Ashton and McKenna .., it’s like they’ve never seen these players play, or don’t have a clear idea of the traits they require.

Johnson. Good with the ball. Can’t defend. Leif. Fantastic with the ball…, really can’t defend .., yeah.., let’s sign Johnson on a contract we can’t afford in the EFL and had none of the traits required.

Furlong mich better defender and more balance for Leif.

We don’t eve use Johnson wide right where his traits might suit better - spent £50 million on McAteer, Walle, Ogbene instead …, since we had resources.., our recruitment had been a fat kid in a sweet shop panic heaped upon panic .., SO bad McKenna is only ever getting a job where he’s mikes away from that side of a club.

Where as a coach in that system, he’ll likely thrive.

Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford. Spending MUCH less to be three times better.

When do they sign a Johnson? They wouldn’t pay him half what we do, they sign world class defenders for £10 million .., less the we paid for Greaves or OShea.

Truffet, Hyson, Jimenez, a joy to watch them play, Van Hecke, Van de berg, Veltman, Hendry. They cost less. Most are on smaller contracts, they get THREE TIMES the level of performance.

That’s why they’re successful.

And that’s what success is. Established in the top flight. Not second in league one to Plymouth, and not losing to Bromley reserves. Wrexham, and third in the league, after spending £200 million gross.

They’re successful. We are not.

They are progressing. We are not.

We’re going backwards. Starting when we had £200 million plus to invest and gave it all to Ashton and McKenna window after window.., in spite of all the failures and obvious flaws.

We’re still making the same mistakes. We haven’t learnt anything. Only now without promotion, they are no resources.
