McKenna: Disappointed With the Result, a Mixed Performance
Friday, 13th Feb 2026 22:57

Town boss Kieran McKenna felt his side’s performance was mixed as they were beaten 1-0 by Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground to exit the FA Cup at the fourth round stage, believing that the key period of the match came around the 20-minute mark.

Josh Windass’s 34th minute goal proved decisive against a much-changed Blues team, McKenna having made 10 changes from the XI which beat Derby County 2-1 at Pride Park in the Championship last weekend.

“Of course, we’re disappointed with the result,” McKenna said. “I thought the performance was mixed.

“I thought we started the game well, were the better team at the start of the game, had some good looks at the goal.

“Lost momentum probably about halfway into the first half when they had a run of set plays one after the other and got some good momentum up, and we weren’t able to quite withstand that or wrestle it back for the rest of the first half and they got their goal in that period.

“I thought in the second half we came out strong again and pushed for the equaliser and we pushed right to the end of the game, but it’s not easy to break them down at that stage. They defend their box well and we were close but we weren’t quite able to get over the line.

“I think the general performance across was mixed for different reasons, we were also playing against a good side.

“It was a tight game but I think probably the key period was the spell in the first half where they managed to get on top of the game and were clinical in terms of getting their goal.”

In addition to the 10 changes, McKenna used players in unfamiliar roles, Chuba Akpom on the left, Sindre Walle Egeli as the number 10 and Elkan Baggott at left-back. The Blues boss was asked whether he learnt anything from those selections.

“Yes,” he continued. “It’s clear that we had two goals coming into tonight, we wanted to go through in the cup and we tried right until the last second to do that, but a big priority had to be getting minutes into players who needed it.

“It’s clear with the schedule that we have and the games that we have to fit in that we’re going to need the squad and we need players match fit and ready to go, so we had to use tonight to get some players ready and to protect some other players.

“And within those players who needed the minutes, we used the opportunity to try some people in some different roles because it could be pivotal for us in the 16 league games we have remaining.

“You don’t quite know in which game or in which moment it might be, but that experience of a different relationship or a different position or a different partnership could be pivotal for us.

“So, we looked at some of those things tonight and there were some positives in there. Of course, when you have a lot of people in the team either getting their first minutes for a while or their first start for a while or playing in different in partnerships, not everything is going to be smooth, but there were some good things in there and certainly lots of things to improve.”

Cedric Kipre was the only player to start both against the Rams and Red Dragons but made way for skipper Dara O’Shea at the break in a move McKenna revealed had been decided before the match.

“We planned before the game that Cedric and Dara would probably do 45 minutes each,” he said. “It’s a little bit tricky with our centre-half balance with Elkan and Greavesy [Jacob Greaves] both being left-footed and it was really important to get them both minutes tonight.

“Of course, we had Elkan playing at left-back because we wanted to keep the balance for the team to have a right-footer there in the partnership. The plan before the game was that they would do half each.”

With O’Shea not starting, George Hirst captained for the first time with McKenna believing the Scotland international worthy of the accolade for his role in the club’s success over the past few seasons.

“It was clear for me,” he added. “He’s been a massive part of the club, into his fourth season now, has been a massive part of the success here. Has been an incredible signing for the football club, an incredible servant for the football club.

“Is still a really important person in the dressing room, a leader in the group, in the leadership group and it was clear that he would have that honour tonight.

“Something that he was really proud of and he battled on but unfortunately wasn’t able to get the goal, but I still think to captain a club like this is something that he’s deserved over the course of his time here and something to be really proud of.”

Quizzed on whether exiting the FA Cup might be a blessing in disguise for the club’s promotion ambitions with a busy fixture list between now and the end of the season, McKenna reflected: “You never know. If you go out and you make the changes and you go and win your next league game, there won’t be too many questions.

“But for me, you look at the schedule and you look at where we would fit in the games for an FA Cup run and, to be honest, it was really hard to see how that wouldn’t be to the detriment of the group.

“Having said that, we’re competitive people and it’s a proud football club and there was a fantastic support here tonight, so we tried to balance those goals with trying to go through in the tie and the players tried and we went to the last second with it.

“And we’re really disappointed for the supporters, especially those who travelled, that we weren’t able to give them the result, but I think with the schedule how it is, having a clear focus now in the league games now, we have two games a week every week up until the middle of April or something like that, so the group’s going to be really important.

“We’ve got minutes into the boys tonight, no injuries and I think that will set us up for the nine games in four weeks that we have coming up than if we hadn’t have given those opportunities.”

Town will be back at the Racecourse for a Championship fixture next Saturday and McKenna was asked whether he felt tonight’s match would have any impact on that game.

“Hopefully a positive one for us and I’m sure Phil will be thinking it’s hopefully positive for them,” he said.

“In reality, I probably don’t think so. It’s good to have been up here, first time at this ground for myself, for a lot of the players and the staff as well, so that’s always useful.

“We know Wrexham are a good team anyway but we felt some of their strengths tonight and we have a week to prepare now, and we need to come up here next week and deliver a really good performance to get the result we want.”

Sounds like he’s got the result he wanted on the pitch and probably he’s right a cup run isn’t a priority. But if the intention was to bring the squad players up to speed I’d say that failed completely. Palmer and Greaves had a few good and it so good moments other than that one else looked anywhere near it. In fairness Neil is short of minutes and given some will improve as for the rest if it comes down to needed them in the last 13 games we’re in big trouble

Travelled to Wrexham. Booked a day off work to watch that!! Don’t mind losing but lose with some fight. It was always going to be 1 goal wins it after the first 20 mins. Hirst isn’t good enough!! Only reason he wasn’t taken off was to save to boo’s. Roll on next week!!

If a cup run would be "to the detriment of the group", then fans might as well give up on going to cup matches and stop buying tickets to those games.

Lack of respect to the competition and fans!

He has contributed, but I don't think George Hirst has been that big a part of our journey... was good in league 1 for half a season. OK in the championship season but the way the others were playing, anyone could have played upfront in that team.. and ultimately replacing him with Kiefer was what got us up... he had 1 or 2 good games in the Premier league and has been terrible this season. Needs replacing in the summer no matter what league we are in.

Otherwise Mckennas assessment is probably spot on. Just hope we don't have to watch that front 4 again this season.... Clarke, Mehmetti, Burns, Philogene and Nunes the ones behind the striker (Azon) from now please.

Confident we will beat them in the league next week.

It doesn't take much reading between the lines to understand that KM won't be losing too much sleep tonight. He's just about stopped short of saying he isn't too bothered. The team selection told anyone that before hand anyway. I've already posted elsewhere my thoughts, but I'll end this by saying, those who spent a fair chunk of money to be there tonight and are going to do so again next weekend deserve a pay back, and I fully expect them to get it!

Those saying KM disrespected the competition and the fans- we had multimillion pound footballers in 10 out 11 positions starting tonight. That team should have been good enough. Not like he chucked the game away...

People just love throwing out that cliché.

ITFC 1994, doesn't really matter whether they're all multi million footballers or not in this case. How ever much they cost, when you have a mishmash of players who either seldom start, or do so infequently or are played out of position, against a team that are just 3 places below us in the same league and on their own turf, with a terrific home record over the past 3/4 seasons. I'd say that was asking for trouble, and we got it.

I'm not saying KM disrepected anything, just saying he won't be kicking the metaphorical cat tonight, and next Saturdays line up will look a whole lot different!

@itfc 1994 , sorry but making 10 changes is being disrespectful especially when we have 8 days rest before we play them again and Wrexham have an away league game Tuesday ! 10 changes always = a very disjointed performance!

Tell me if I am wrong, but our home game against Leicester will be postponed if Leicester progress to the 5th round on the 7th March. McKenna goes on about à lack of time to fit all the matches in, well we maybe twiddling our thumbs watching Wrexham taking on a top flight Premier league team that weekend. In which case why did we choose to bottle the game tonight?

Poor team selection = poor outcome. Very little craft or fight. I've said it many times, but this game was glaringly obvious. A one legged blind man would be more useful than both Hirst and Akpom! Even my Kiwi girlfriend, who now supports Town, but only has a tenuous grasp of the game remarked why we continue to play Hirst. As others have noted, if we need to rely on some of these players to get us over the line, we're gonna come up short!

PSGBlue, you are correct about the Leicester game, if it happened. Which could ultimately mean a proper fixture headache, unless of course we can play another rescheduled league match that weekend ( Portsmouth! ).

I find it sad that what was once the greatest cup competition in the World has been ruined and the modern day fan will never understand what it meant!

Similar pattern to most of defeats this season. We miss a few chances & then concede to a mistake at ths back / breakaway goal

A poor performance, yes. It's time to wake up and smell the roses as fans and realise this situation is far from new. Cup competitions are not a priority. They bring in small amounts of revenue (unlike the heyday of the competitions) and have become a "reserves" contest, particularly for championship clubs competing for promotion. Good support made the long journey, but if you're prepared to do so you should also be prepared to be disappointed as that is the likelihood.

Armchaircritic59, that did cross my mind too. But Portsmouth are playing Blackburn in the Championship on March 7th. So a Leicester win against Southampton today in the cup, leaves us without a game on March 7th!

I've seen to many games this season when we are slow and pondous if we change most of the team and still don't win next week plenty of criticism will be going McKennas way. With these large squads I find all this hard to understand to many games rubbish players used to play 60 to 70 games a season at the top level playing Liverpool and Forest Not Oxford and Sheffield Wednesday youth team.

I’m not sure the performance was mixed. It was extremely poor with no continuity no pace and no aggression. Our passing was awful ball retention poor and again we were slow and predictable. Wrexham will bully us in the league game in the same way Sheffield United did. Shameful performance

The big disappointment for myself was the poor form of Hirst but the biggest in terms of money was Egili. He ran from player to player with no plan, made seven touches in the first half (not counting corners) and of the seven 3 went astray. Then did not get substituted after and even worst second half. I can’t see any improvement in him this season and not sure we will next

If he had made 10 ten changes with 10 under 21s then that could be regarded as disrespectful. Cup games are not a priority these days. We had several multi million players on that pitch and not many covered themselves in glory, atm Egali is struggling big timel, poor last night! We should of had enough about us to win that game last night, Hirst again very poor, so low on confidence, no doubting his effort, failing to even connect with a couple that should of at least tested the keeper, Hirst is a player trying to hard to overcome his lack of confidence and for me those two missed efforts prove that point!

If i had to choose between victory in the cup or in the league i would choose in the league every time!

Let face it Round 4 of the FA Cup on a Friday night in Wrexham! Hardly earth shattering stuff. That said, I applaud the fans who made the effort.
However, apart from the BBC who hype it up “ as the magic of the cup” it means very little to most of us anymore.
Wrexham will take the plaudits ‘cause anything with”Wrexham” in the title adds another “wow” factor to the story just now but today’s championship games and particularly Mondays is of a lot more interest to me than last nights result.

Nice comments McK - let’s see when we play than in the league next week. If it’s the same $hit performance again then today was just a pathetic excuse. FA Cup so what, I took half day leave to go to Wrexham and got home in the wee hours if the morning just to watch this kind of crap? Today was another 90 minutes of headless chicken running against a club who was in League One last season. The slow, sideways and backwards passing isn’t because of the 10 changes, it’s a habit drilled into the team by YOU which has given rise to consistent underperformance this season. Watch our matches, no one would believe we have the most expensive squad in the entire EFL

This is an odd rambling performance from McKenna. He gave the captaincy to Hirst presumably in an effort to give him some confidence and score a goal, it sounds more like he's retiring at the end of the season and this was a reward for his efforts - maybe so?!
One of the more bizarre positives he takes away is that we have now been here, really useful. Heaven help you if you ever get to manage a team in Europe, Kieran.
When you make 10 changes, it may be disrespectful to the competition and the fans but what's certain is it doesn't signal a powerful performance, however much has been spent on them. And of course exciting the Cup means those fringe players won't get any more game time this season unless there are injuries, so that has backfired.
With every manager of every team we play saying we are the best in the division why aren't we 10 points clear at the top?
