Parkinson: The Supporters Should Be Proud of Our Team
Saturday, 21st Feb 2026 19:26

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson praised the magnitude of his team’s effort and commitment following their 5-3 victory over the Blues at the Racecourse Ground.

Town are still waiting for a win against the Red Dragons having lost three - including the FA Cup tie eight days ago - and drawn one - the goalless stalemate at Portman Road in November - of the four meetings.

“I think you’ve got to understand that in performance today there were a couple of factors,” Parkinson said.

“We went to Bristol City on Tuesday and Bristol hadn’t had a weekend game. We’ve played Ipswich today, they didn’t have a midweek game and they completely changed the team from the Friday.

“The magnitude of the effort and the commitment the lads have given us today, if ever there was a game our supporters should be proud of the team, it was today.”

Parkinson was delighted with former Blues striker Kieffer Moore, who scored the opening goal and assisted his side’s second for Josh Windass.

“I thought Kieffer was back to his best today, I thought he was unplayable, particularly in the first half,” the one-time Colchester boss said. “And Josh does what he does, he produces big moments.

“But in general in the game, I said to the lads at half-time, ‘don’t let the goal affect us at 2-2’. I thought we were unlucky not to be ahead. And then lo and behold the centre-half [Cedric Kipre] smashes one in to make it 3-2.

“I think a lesser group of players could have started letting a bit of fatigue creep into them mentally, but we didn’t, we responded brilliantly and that’s a great effort from the lads.

“The subs obviously impacted when we needed them the most, but all in all, the team effort today was right up there.”

Reflecting on beating the Blues, a result he said is right up there with all his previous achievements with Wrexham, Parkinson added: “They’re hard team to play against and they’ve got a great manager, one of the best young managers in the country.

“It’s a challenge for us. I said to the lads before the game, ‘what an opportunity this is against a team that was in the Premier League last year. We know tactically what we’ve got to do with the ball and without it. Now can we execute that game plan?’.

“And I think we did that really well today. In the first half, some of the football we played was really good and in the second half, we looked a constant threat, particularly when Broady [Nathan Broadhead] came on.”

Parkinson also felt his side should have been awarded a penalty when Christian Walton caught Callum Doyle, who later netted his side’s fourth goal, on the head as the pair challenged for a corner.

“I don’t think you’re going to see a more blatant penalty than that,” he insisted. “Doyley’s very lucky that he wasn’t knocked clean out in that moment. It was an absolutely reckless challenge.

“The ref’s got his own interpretation of it, I’ve already had a chat with him, but you can’t believe the linesman and the ref between them haven’t given that penalty. Credit to Doyley as he’s got up and then gone and scored the goal.”

You should be proud of yourself as well Phil. On a fraction of McKennas undeserved, eye watering and over inflated salary, you’ve played him three times and out foxed him three times.

Is this the best version of ourselves Mark Ashton?

Team of proper characters Wrexham are. We have a lack of leaders and a lack of desire, no back bone

We wont go up this year

Dear Mr Ashton
It is always encouraging to see leadership step forward when the club is thriving — when results are strong, spirits are high, and optimism fills the stands. In those moments, communication flows easily. Statements are issued, interviews are given, and the connection with supporters feels visible and deliberate.

But leadership is not measured in comfortable moments.

When performances decline, when decisions are questioned, and when supporters are anxious about the direction of the club, that is when presence matters most. That is when accountability builds trust. And yet, during these more difficult periods, your voice seems noticeably absent.

Supporters are not fair-weather stakeholders. They invest emotionally, financially, and generationally in this club. They deserve transparency not only in success, but in adversity. Silence in challenging times can feel like distance. It can create the impression that communication is conditional — offered when it is easy, withheld when it is uncomfortable.

Strong leadership requires consistency. It requires facing difficult questions directly:
   •   What is the plan to correct the current trajectory?
   •   What responsibility does the executive level take for the situation?
   •   How will lessons be learned and applied?
   •   What assurances can you give that the long-term vision remains credible and intact?

Supporters do not expect perfection. They expect honesty. They expect courage. And above all, they expect the same visibility in hardship that they see in success.

The badge does not change when results do. Neither should leadership presence.

Now is the time to step forward — not when it is easy, but because it is necessary
Let’s run towards adversity together shall we ?

Pretty much spot on comments from PP. A hardworking, 100% commited outfit, with no little ability in key positions. They can be proud of what they're achieving yet again. Whereas we have a player coming out post match and actually admitting it looked like they wanted it more, and they did. Best of luck for the rest of the season PP.

Bluespeed, excellent post. I've been expecting the usual post transfer window interview done by Matt Holland with MA & KM. Strangely unforthcoming since it closed nearly 3 weeks ago. Maybe waiting for a rather more opportune moment?

@bluespeed, probably the best post on here this month. No abuse just plain speaking about what the club needs at this point in time - leadership on and off the field.

"We know tactically what we’ve got to do with the ball and without it. Now can we execute that game plan? - Unfortunately, a lot of opposition managers this season have worked out what they 'tactically' have to do against Ipswich, because we are so predictable. Wrexham/Parkinson, to their credit, had the confidence not to set up in a completely defensive system, but they still knew how to disrupt us & where to press us for errors.
We have depended on moments of individual quality, from exceptional players at this level, to score a lot of goals this season & win us points, but there is an argument that we have not really progressed as a team/unit that can consistently get results by opening up the opposition with sharp, penetrative play. For that reason, we have struggled when we go behind. Even Yesterday, when we got back in front, we'd have to concede that Wrexham were the better, more likely side throughout, despite us scoring some quality goals. The Coventry game(s) aside, we just haven't been convincing, and there are signs of panic on the sideline creeping in.

PP said after the last match, that he knew exactly how Ipswich played, so we should have changed tactics.

You only beat Ipswich, even Oxford did that.

Bluespeed takes a lot of words to say very little. You would certainly not expect Ashton to address the current situation, which its hardly a crisis. So much entitlement amongst our fans.

JohnTy, I'm getting very tired of hearing the word entitlement bandied about. It's not entitlement, it's expectation, different words, different meanings. As for MA/KM interviews, they usually do one after transfer windows, 3 weeks later in this case, nothing so far. Obviously I don't know why, I could hazard a guess, but that would be all it is. I'm expecting us to beat Watford on Tuesday night, we're most certainly not entitled to it.

I have been an Ipswich supporter for a very long time. I have never had expectations, but have always hoped for a good result.

I view Mr Ashton as Mr Teflon...nothing will stick to him when the brown stuff hits the fan. Im not sure how close we are getting to that because will the owners be happy with the last two seasons given the huge sums of money spent on these two squads in that time? I doubt it, given the huge financial outlay.

Will Ashton still be beside his protegé, I wonder ( " I think ive found the perfect man for the job, he speaks the same language as ME and has the same vision as ME", Ashton on identifying McKenna), I seriously doubt it somehow. Ive always had my reservations about Mr Ashton for some reason. A visceral, nagging doubt about him He talks the talk, and soends money like water. Hes very proud of his achievements, and yes, thrre has been sone eye eatering money sornt on this Club's infrastructure, all needed after years of Evans underinvestment.

But on the player recruitment front i feel he has failed to nail the single most important singing we've needed, a striker, even when it was clear (months before Delap left), that he was leaving, and would need replacing. The same could arguably be said of our captain, Morsy. I was saying 2 years ago we needed to be looking for his replacement. Instead he gets in squad fillers like McAteer for an astronomical £12m.....

Just how many hats fies Mr Ashton wear on a daily basis at thus club now? He's claimed in his many interviews, that there's not enough hours in the day to do all the jobs. Well, WHY was his co senior manager replacement never found and recruited? Why did Mr Ashton take it upon himself to do both jobs. It smacks of Empire building to me, and certainly set off alarm bells to me.

Nothing is forever, as they say and Mr Ashton will leave this club for pastures new ( probably the States), where he will not doubt have another blank cheque book to build another Ashton Kingdom, State side. Nothing will stick to him here, when and if it unravels.... but he will leave long before the brown stuff hits the fan I feel...

But is history going to repeat itself here I wonder?

They say there's no smoke, without fire and he appears to have undertaken similar uncontrolled or extravagant spending, ( but on a smaller scale) at Bristol City. Those fans were highly critical of his spending patterns, which they say left their club in z financial mess he financial plight they accuse him of, before he jumped ship ( as they saw it) to join us. I just hope history, if that was true, is not going to be repeated here.

So as an early ( far more eloquent) post than mine has asked, where are you Mr Ashton, are you running toward adversity with us....?

@Bluespeed.
As most have stated a well and calmly written post. However I do take issue with a few major points.
1. Supporters are anxious bout the direction of the club. Really? The direction of the club has never, in its history been more clear or more positive.
2. Fans are not fair weather, sadly this is not true in all cases, there have been a lot of people either reconnected with the club or just started their journey since we’ve started seeing some success.
3. “ • What is the plan to correct the current trajectory?” Our current trajectory is we have have 38 points from our last 20 league games. We top the table in that period. Trajectory is not measured after 2 or 3 games, it’s measured over a longer period to gain perspective.

I know Saturdays result was disappointing but the over reaction has been incredible. If, and it is a big if, we win our games in hand we’re 2 points off automatics. If we beat Watford tomorrow, that’s 6 points from 3 really tough away games. I’d have bitten your hand off for 2 point average over that away spell.

I do wholeheartedly agree that Mark Ashton should be more visible during potential setbacks though.

Its not about just the last game though is it. Ive found Town to be slow, predictable, one dimensional, almost boring at times, for the last two years. Where's the energy excitement and spontaneity gone?

Expect is a tricky word.

I) I expect to go to the match on Saturday.

ii) I expect you to be on time

Two different uses. The second is not far removed from entitlement. It suggests a power relationship. If you mean " I think my team will win at Watford" then that is clearly a different use of the word expect.
