Still: Game Got Away From Us on Two Unlucky Bounces
Tuesday, 24th Feb 2026 23:51

Watford head coach Ed Still felt his side lacked aggression during the first half of their 2-0 defeat to the Blues at Vicarage Road.

Still, who took charge a fortnight ago, was tasting defeat as Hornets boss for the first time following a draw at Preston and victory over Derby at the weekend, Sindre Walle Egeli and George Hirst netting the Blues’ goals.

“I was very disappointed with how aggressive we were, or were not, in the first half,” Still said.

“We didn’t execute the pressing triggers that we wanted, we were much more passive than we wanted to be in there in the first half.

“Despite that, we haven’t conceded any big chances there in the first half. We were lower than what we wanted to be but we’ve conceded nearly nothing there in the first half.

“Apart from a free-kick which, honestly, I don’t know in what world that is a free-kick or a foul against Mattie Pollock [on Ivan Azon], it just isn’t.

“That was my instinct on the side of the pitch and then having seen it again now, it just isn’t a free-kick. Disappointing to concede off a rebound there.

“In the second half, we came out much better, we were much more aggressive, as we intended to be in the first half.

“We’ve put them under pressure, we’ve made it difficult for them and we had a really good spell there for 20, 25 minutes at the beginning of the second half where we should have got something back in the game.

“We should have just been a little bit more clinical in the final third to be able to create a chance or two more than we did.

“And then we’ve been unlucky on the break for that second goal where in a moment of hesitation in the box they’ve had a good bounce and you end up losing 2-0.

“It’s strange because it feels like the game has got away from us a little bit on a couple of unlucky bounces.

“Having looked at the shot count, shots are equal. A lot of the post-match stats are actually very equal, so there was definitely room for us to get something out of the game.”

Asked why his side weren’t as aggressive as he’d hoped, he added: “It’s that challenge of turnover two days later, having very little time on the training pitch. It happens sometimes, that you don’t start as aggressively, as much on the front foot as you intend to do.

“Credit to Ipswich as well, they’re a really good side and they did move the ball quickly and well in the first half.

“But what was positive was that we weren’t as aggressive as we wanted to be but despite that we haven’t conceded any significant chances, apart from a free-kick on the edge of the box which isn’t one and then an unlucky bounce from that.”

Regarding Tom Ince’s late penalty miss, he reflected: “Just one of those things, it happens. You accept them when you miss them and can’t do much about it.”

Well Ed, your team created absolutely nothing for 99% of the match. I think that's what you need to concentrate on going forward. Then you might get a couple of bounces going for you. It's what footballs tend to do, bounce that is!

Watched a different game to me. Thought we were good value for the win. Nothing to do with unlucky bounces.

We deserved to win, but I agree we created fewer actual dangerous chances than I would have liked. That is often the case. Good build-up play, but lacking a bit where it matters.

Missed the bit where Azon should have at least tested your keeper but blasted over for 2-0, then two good chances for Hirst that could (maybe should) have put Town another 2 ahead. Also missed the bit where Matusiwa absolutely controlled midfield. Also missed the bit where Walton was a spectator for the first 50 minutes. Also missed the bit where your right back was on an early yellow because he couldn't control Jack Clarke. Also missed the bit where one of your players should have been red carded for 2 or 3 second yellows. Apart from Town being in complete control for 90% of the game your assessment is spot on!!!!!!

Also missed the bit where we should have had a penalty before they did (apart from which I thought ref pretty good for Championship standards).

Their only real opportunity of the game came from a lucky ricochet, then a penalty that was super-soft from Tom Ince throwing himself to the ground at even the suggestion of contact.

Contrary to the Derby game, Watford really created nothing of note otherwise.

Not sure how anyone can think it was a soft penalty - stupid yes. That’s a pen all day - Walton dug Furlong out.
Good performance, and let’s be honest, 6 points from the 3 consecutive away games against top half teams is a decent return. Need to follow that up now with 3 decent home results.

For most of the first half Watford deployed a low block of 5 but we managed to get a few shots away. Our quality and movement was very superior to Watford who were surprisingly less aggressive than I expected.

How is Hirst's goal a 'bounce'? It was a very good goal using the right part of his body at the time. Slightly marred by what he did (didn't do) with his foot shortly afterwards, but hey.

Virginblue. How is that a penalty? 2 players running towards the direction the ball is coming in from, they collide, and you think thats a penalty?

Thought he was correct about the free kick being a harsh decision , but that penalty decision was diabolical.

It’s a pen all day long. He had 2 hands on Ince. Check out Greaves interview - he acknowledged that Furlong didn’t need to do it, which is pretty much an admission that it’s a pen
And if that’s not given the other end we’re all screaming for a pen. Take your blue tinted glasses off.

Leaving Egeli totally unmarked in the box at a free kick is probably something to work on

He won't last 5 minutes at Watford.

Penalty? Yes. Was it soft? Yes.

Let's move on.

“Quote - “It’s strange because it feels like the game has got away from us a little bit on a couple of unlucky bounces”.

I think the game got away from you because your boys were outplayed Mr Still.

One of the worst cry baby post match interviews I’ve come across.
Walton had two saves to make all match, and one of those was a penalty.

Fact of the matter is, we should really have scored another two goals. 4-0 would certainly not have flattered us.

Lightningboy, he already has. I've heard he's getting a golden handshake in a few days time for longevity of service!
