Hirst Wins Cap in Scotland Defeat
Saturday, 28th Mar 2026 19:51

George Hirst won his seventh Scotland cap as his side were beaten 1-0 by Japan in a friendly at Hampden Park.

Hirst, 27, came on as a sub in the 63rd minute and came close to putting the Scots ahead on 79 when he did well to work the ball in from the left but hit the side-netting with his low strike. Junya Ito netted for the visitors six minutes from time.

Scotland are in action again on Tuesday when they face Cote d’Ivoire in another friendly in Liverpool.

Elsewhere, academy striker Sid Eldred was in a Northern Ireland U19s side which beat Azerbaijan 2-1 at a Euros qualification mini-tournament in Lithuania, the 18-year-old laying on what proved to be the winning goal for Brentford’s Coran Madden.

Young central defenders Corbin Mthunzi and Oliver Wilkinson were unused subs for Zimbabwe’s senior side, who beat Botswana 3-0, ex-Blues loanee Macauley Bonne among the scorers, and England’s U17s, who lost 3-1 to Israel.

Scotland getting some good preparation in for their failure in the States this summer - or will they prove the doubters wrong and get a point ?

Hirst did more in his half hour on the pitch than Dykes managed in the hour before he gave way to Hirst, hope George starts against Côte d'Ivoire.

WeWereZombies, well that's at least good to hear, didn't see it myself. I have to say if I were a striker and found myself behind Lyndon Dykes in any pecking order, I'd be a very worried one!

We WereZombies: thats exactly what i was going to post! How the hell that apology for a striker gets in ahead of him everytime ill never know. He's only scored 2 goals in the Championship I think...

Pretty poor performance from the Scots but apparently they're abysmal in friendlies running up to major tournaments, personally think as soon as they're off the plane in the Summer they'll be back on it, hopefully I'll be wrong.

Phil - Shouldn't latest news go above something previous? The Ashton thing is done and we move on. Unless this site prefers to hang our dirty washing and some.

bluelad7, I think it's a case of which article is generating the most interest, and that's not even a contest. Like many, I had my say2/3 days go, no point in keep repeating it. It will pass, might be something of a hangover, but pass it will. I think a lot of us are now tentatively looking forward to some actual football.
