Oh sh1t.

That's spoiled my day somewhat.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

What have we done to him?

Leaving for another club I could see but taking time out from footy I did not

I wonder if there any constraints on his future employment as he has left whilst under contract

Was just wondering that myself.

I'm sure he's far too honourable to lie about his intentions but, at face value, it would appear to be one way of getting around an £8m release clause.

If he now rocks up at fulham then we will end up in court and rightly should demand 8mil compensation

Something doesn't smell quite right about it, if I'm honest.

I suspect there will be a clause which says he cannot take another job for X months if he resigns, and he will have something lined up for whenever that expires (otherwise a release clause is not worth the paper it is written on).

Honestly. Better this than ditching us for Fulham. Makes me sad though.

Ashton out

I hope everything is OK with him but this is far from ideal to say the least.

To be fair the guy has worked tirelessly for us, full on for 5 years. For a huge amount of money of course, which allows him to take time out that he clearly needs.

I agree.

Nothing of any of his demeanour suggested a move like this was on the cards. Although, that said, I'm not sure anyone would have predicted Thomas Frank was going to opt for an extended break.

£7m if he takes a role in the next 12 months

Devastated, but I get it. Doesn't feel he can take us any further, fears a second relegation on his CV, stock is as high as it will likely get, but doesn't want/can't get any of the current posts. Takes a break and then swoops when someone gets sacked. Understandable enough.

What a bloke.

There will be financial penalties to protect the club, but I doubt a non-compete clause will be there.

Courts will not enforce a non-compete clause simply to prevent competition; there must be something genuinely worth protecting, typically confidential tactical or recruitment knowledge (unlikely), relationships with players or agents (not sure which players he would take), or access to sensitive club data (again unlikely).

Times like this you look back trying to make sense of it all...those quotes in press conferences...every piece of body language will now be poured over.

Just sounds like 5 years in charge of Town and the bloke is exhausted - wont be going anywhere else for at least a year or else the buy out clause will be activated.

The next person in will have big shoes to follow, but will also have a club in the position a lot of managers would love to inherit. Thanks Kieran, you will always be welcome back at Portman Road

Something must have happened. You could see how much being promoted meant to him. He's an ambitious manager who has only been in the job for 4 1/2 years. Not like Klopp or Pep who are taking a break.

Wish him the very best all the same. He did wonders for our club.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

This wasn't a decision that was taken overnight, it has been something that has been on the cards since the very end of last season and his comments about taking a break and avoiding about talking about next season at any cost in the press conferences post promotion made it clear to anyone who wanted to see it.

Many people didn't want to hear it, but if you go back and analyse those comments now you will see it was in plain views the whole time.

Lastly, the guy is really obsessed with football so I'm sure you're able to read between the lines here.

This is all supposition and hindsight. He didn't, for me, talk any more or any less about the next season than he usually does. Not sure how you've managed to read his thoughts or what we're meant to "read between the lines".

In one of the end of season interviews, he said something along the lines of "it's been a really tough season for a variety of reasons, not all of them publicly known about". Seemed like quite a telling thing to say at the time, even more so now. Think we'll probably find out sooner or later, but I also think we can take him at his word. Surely he's earned that?

This is the situation for me, I absolutely agree and was always worried that the fear of 2/2 relegations on the CV was behind the interest from his agent toward Fulham.

Once it became clear they weren't going to pay the comp and we would not allow him to just go he did the only thing remaining and fair enough.

It's early enough to allow us to plan for next season. Cheers for the memories Kieran.

O'Neill has only signed a one year deal with Celtic, maybe he's taking a year out then going there in 12 month's time.

Seems to me that the guy just needs a break for wellbeing and/or maybe family reasons. We all know what a punishing schedule he set himself, at his desk by 6am six days a week.

He has integrity, so all those suspecting ulterior motives, or saying “something doesn’t small right” can do one as far as I’m concerned.

All the best KM, and thank you for everything 👍

Been away on holiday, time with the family etc. Sometimes it's when you stop and take a break that your realise how knackered you are and/or take stock of where you are in life. Maybe time with the wife and kids has made him realised how much he's been missing.
