| Burnham wins Makerfield on 06:36 - Jun 19 with 2222 views | NthQldITFC | Translating that into percentage points is a 21 point difference (Labour 55%, Reform 34%). Considering the polling was saying a less than 10 point win for Labour, I suspect this speaks to a return to more mature thinking for a lot of people who have publicly flirted with shallow, right wing populism but who, deep down in the polling booth, realise that this issues facing our country and the world as a whole need honest adults at the helm to chart a course of positive compromise and co-operation. | |

I can’t believe the good people of makerfield are looking at the Labour Party a thinking “hey I want 2 more years of that” Then again I don’t suppose the alternative is any better Sigh

A lot of them won't have been voting for 'two more years of that', though. A vote for Burnham has been (hopefully) a vote for the polar opposite. Ta-ra, Keir. [Post edited 19 Jun 7:21]

You think he’s going to go easily or quickly ? You think steering , lammy or the ginger council estate one are gonna roll over and let Burnham have the leadership? This will be a mess for months, and all that time the government isn’t running things , they’re distracted with keeping their own Jobs Personally I believe that if a PM resigns or is leadership challenged, it should trigger a GE.

Think it's more that by-elections make it a bit clearer who is best placed to beat the Reform candidate and a lot of people are very motivated by that. The right-wing vote share didn't change much.

Agree with this. While I understand the historical reasons why a GE isn’t triggered by changing a Prime Minister, it should be.

Of course not. They're voting for a complete reboot of the Labour Party and with a recognition that the alternative is just a shallow, reactionary, single issue fantasy act, existentially dangerous to the whole country.

It's rather telling when you use the other contenders' names, and then choose to refer to Rayner as 'that ginger Council estate one'.

| Burnham wins Makerfield on 07:33 - Jun 19 with 1896 views | Perublue | I personally don’t subscribe to the need or want of a General Election if the PM changes regardless of colour of party… for me you either voting for the party at a GE or at the very least your own local candidate and their skills and views again whichever party. The prime minister yes is the first among equals in the government…it shouldn’t be personality politics like the States or any other slightly less autocratic countries. | |

He's kicking himself. If he had given £1,083.19 to each of 4,616 Labour voters to convince them to vote Reform, he could have won that. This would only have cost him £5,000,000 plus the £5.04 he spent on a pint in 'spoons while waiting for his contact.

More worryingly for Reform, Restore took 7% of their vote. If that was repeated in a GE I suspect it would push them down enough to lose a lot of their potential seats. SB

Unless the Resolva party is formed, that could split their vote even further...or clear a path for them.

Did you say the same for the all the times the Tories changed leader? It's always been this way, you vote for a party not a leader, it's not a presidential system. "ginger council estate one" Stay classy. SB [Post edited 19 Jun 8:25]

God, no, we’d have been having an election every ten minutes for the past decade. I don’t want to have to go and vote every time my lettuce goes past its use by date.
