If Bergamo think that his wages are potentially a problem, will we be able to pay them? Probably, but so would any other PL club that are interested. OM aren't the most stable of clubs so maybe he'd be interested in coming back to the PL. They've just appointed my left-field suggestion to fill K McK's shoes of Bruno Genesio as manager.

Depends how much we want him relative to the other clubs I guess. Xhaka is reportedly on about £150k a week at Sunderland but he's been worth every penny of it.

Yes you could say with hindsight given how Sunderland's season went that Xhaka was worth every penny of £150k per week. But for Town that would be a very big shift in direction in terms of the wage structure we have. Listening to the recent KoA podcast episode with the football finance expert Kieran Maguire he was saying that the last time in the PL our average wage was around £30k. Now he said that say roughly £30k per week is what Brentford were paying when they first got promoted to the PL but that has crept up season by season to where they now average around £55k per week. For Town I appreciate that with an average of £30k per week last time we were in the PL some will have been above that amount and some below it for it to be the average but I very much doubt that out top wage was probably even anywhere close to say half of Xhaka's £150k per week and so that would be a huge shift in our wage structure. Maybe a shift in approach of paying some very big wages to say two or three players is exactly what is needed by Town in order to attract the type of player that we need to elevate the quality of our squad in order to give us a chance of staying up. However we still need to stay within the SCR finance rules and the cold hard facts is that our income/turnover etc. will not be as high as most other PL teams and so we do need to buy wisely in order to have enough financial headroom to buy players across the team so as to have a squad capable of competing in the PL.

I think our average wage in the Premier League was some way higher than that. Player wages for the year were £77.1m per the published accounts, which is £1.5m per week. Appreciate some of the cost will be on academy players etc but that will be small numbers. That's an average of £50k p/w even over a 30 man squad. That'll be up again for 2026 / 2027. I think the point remains that £150k is probably unrealistic on 1 player, although I'm told our contribution to Phillips' wage wasn't far off that. The fact it was a loan and not saddled with that liability beyond 1 season no doubt made it more palatable.

Yep - £77.1m. Although for comparison: Brentford £130.8m Bournemouth £158.4m Shows you what we are up against. I think you have to go big for 2/3 players that can be real difference makers you can build your team around. As you've alluded to, we spunked £5m away on Kalvin Phillips for a season with little return for it. You need to be canny with how the deals are structured but you have to take calculated risks and hope they work. If our highest earner is on £50k a week this season then we are probably on a fast track to relegation.

That £77.1 million was spread over 349 people, not 30 members of a squad. 189 of which are classified as playing, management and training. 160 admin staff? Average employee reporting is not well standardised, so i'd take the photo below as a decent indication with the remainder being match day people etc, not necessarily full time wages etc. Probably, £5m of that McKenna's if reports were to be believed lol! This photo has about 250 people in it. 27 in the squad, say they're on £35k a a week, that's another £49m, so £54m including KM. 100 random staff, say match day people, maybe earning something like £10k a year, stewards, cleaners etc? I'm guessing here.....another £1m £23m divided by the remaining 223 people is £100k a year each. Some will be higher accountants (i'd hope ;-) ) top coaches, including Pert etc some obviously lower, younger analysts etc. To compare with Brentford though, they had 589 employees! https://www.facebook.com/photo

But as we all know no club is ever in a position where 100% of their incoming transfers are a success and we just have to hope that this season we get the ones that we spend big on right, unlike say with Kalvin Phillips who I don't think that we saw value from (although I think he was a bit unlucky with the sending off against Leicester and injuries at bad times). However whether the signings we make this summer turn out well or not will likely only be judged by the end of the season so we'll wait and see. Regarding transfer fees as opposed to wages I don't think that on a net basis we've been shy of splashing cash going by the details in the following link (if the underlying data is correct) which shows clubs net spend over 5 years and Town are 13th out of next season 20 PL teams. https://www.football365.com/ne Obviously there are teams who have spent much more than Town who we are higher than in the table but they are further down the line in successful player trading so they also have big sales to offset big purchases when working out the net spend. Buying good players at reasonable fees who secure you PL safety and get you moving up the table season by season but selling them for massive profits before doing it all again on new players is what we need to get much better at if we are to move forwards as a club because this player trading model is what other clubs such as Brighton, Bournemouth and Brentford all do very well. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
