I remember this game well. The team was announced before kick off and there were many boos and shouts of derision when people realised that Mills would be playing in midfield. He then scored the first goal and had an outstanding game. He mentioned this in the next match day program and explained the tactical reasons why he played in midfield. Quite rightly and understandably highly critical of those who booed the announcement. |  | | |

Thank you for posting that. Robson’s third and best team was really beginning to function at that point and devastate teams on a regular basis.
The autumn hadn’t been good, including five straight league losses. I went to the Liverpool and Arsenal two 2-1 defeats and there was plenty of talk afterwards about whether Robson’s time was coming to an end.
Yet around Christmas time, the team took off. It had taken a while of patchy, sometimes indifferent performances, but it truly gelled and what a team it became. |  | | |

First two goals were brilliant build up involving nearly the whole team and then the third - long punt downfield from Cooper, big man (Mariner) nods it down and little man (Gates) finishes. Wonderful stuff.
