| Seeding in the EFL Cup 06:45 - Aug 27 with 1502 views | LegendofthePhoenix | There's an inexorable creep to seeding in the cup competitions isn't there? I can't quite understand the rationale for seeding the 8 teams playing in Europe so that they all avoided each other. Not that they called it seeding. Why would it be a problem if say Arsenal had been drawn against Aston Villa? They would still play the game in the w/c 14th Sept. Only conclusion I can draw is that the big clubs want to avoid each other as long as possible. | |

| Seeding in the EFL Cup on 06:48 - Aug 27 with 1467 views | Zx1988 | The apparent issue is that the European competitions straddled both potential matchweeks for R3. Two Champions League teams could play each other without issue, but a CL team meeting a Europa League team would apparently result in scheduling issues. Definitely seeding via the back door, though. They'd have found a way to make it work. | |

Without the big clubs, the competition is worth significantly less to the EFL, and probably loses its European place. Of course the EFL will do what it can to keep them happy.

Is an opinion. The EFL represents the 72, not the PL

I mean this is it - it needed to be done like this due to Europe. If Sunderland drew Arsenal they wouldn’t be able to play the fixture, easy to use the Villa example which happens to work. But also the cup is treated with disdain and many clubs don’t care about it let alone the big clubs so I don’t think they’d be campaigning for this or trying to do back door seeding. I doubt they really care who they face, they’d probably rather face the bigger clubs if anything for gate receipts, can’t imagine Chelsea are thrilled to be hosting Luton tonight, for example.
| Seeding in the EFL Cup on 08:32 - Aug 27 with 1044 views | Pinewoodblue | Thought the method used to decide if the 8 clubs joining in played home or away was pathetic. It is an EFL competition when Premier League clubs joining the competition, be it in round 2 or 3 they should play away. | |

it's a bit of an anachronism nowadays. The EFL Cup - but teams not in the EFL get a preferential route in! Since the PL broke away from the EFL it just seems a bit lost, and to subjugate more and more to the PL teams as each year goes by shows how little power the EFL has in English football in comparison.

Yes but the main reason this competition still exists is that it makes money for EFL clubs. Hence the EFL want to keep sponsors & TV sweet, so it is now hugely biased to produce an Arsenal v Man City final or such like.

What would have been better is just to use the same method as FIFA/UEFA use to avoid 'forbidden' matches in their competitions. If the second ball drawn would result in a 'forbidden' match, just put it back and re-draw.

And, if the PL teams don't enter, it'd be as popular as the Pizza Cup
