I don't think you get put on gardening leave if you resign.
Unless it's a notice period they don't want/need you to work. Doubt they have standard notice periods in football manager contracts, given the way that they are sacked or move to other clubs. [Post edited 30 Aug 10:27]

If he resigned though you’d assume he could walk into another job without compensation being due to us - which isn’t what Ashton intimated when asked. He basically said the club was protected.

I would broadly agree with that but worth remembering when he signed that new contract he held most of the cards given the interest from Brighton and others.
At the time, we needed him far more than he needed us.

Doubt he’s on gardening leave, because that would mean he’s still employed by the club and we would still be paying his wages. My understanding (may be wrongly) was that his contract was terminated on terms, one of which covers the buy out clause. | |

The only risk would be "former manager breathing down the neck" syndrome, at a time when O'Neil is still establishing himself at the club. Especially if things didn't go well today.
I'm also not sure how much of a natural pundit he is, spouting opinions on something he is not directly involved in (especially of the audience stirring variety the media like). | |

I don't recall anyone mentioning garden leave at the time? The official announcement and Phil's report of it didn't. I presumed therefore that the club and KM had agreed that KM's contract of employment would be terminated forthwith, ie that the club had waived KM's notice obligation in the contract.
If this is wrong and, in fact, KM gave notice of his resignation, then the club would be entitled to place him on garden leave for the period of his notice and I would assume the club would do this (you don't want the absurd possibility of a former manager still in the building as a new manager arrives). In those circumstances, the club would be obliged to continue to pay him. Normally an employee's notice period is quite short (and much shorter than that which an employer must give) although it might have been longer to reflect KM's senior position. However, I emphasise that none of this was reported or even hinted at the time.
All of this is, of course, entirely separate to the compensation clause that would become payable if KM should join another club within the agreed timeframe. As others have explained in this thread and as we touched on in a different thread last week.
Edit: sorry to be a pedant and I've had to correct myself, but the correct phrase is garden leave. Ie, to reflect that you're supposed to spend time in the garden (but not necessarily gardening) if you should find yourself lucky enough to be on the receiving end of such a clause (which I haven't).

I am sure Sky would love it, with him having links to both clubs. Pundits are largely ego-fuelled wanting to be seen as the fount of all football knowledge and cutting opinion and it is something I do not see in him. I do not think he would feel comfortable either doing it or having to dissect what went wrong for us if we do lose. The guy has class and modesty. Maybe he will dip his toe in one day for the experience of it. To see his insights would of course be fascinating as he would maybe have more freedom to speculate than when on media duties for us where he was quite reserved. | | | |
