He was decent in the Prem last time. So far I've seen nothing to suggest Akpom's a better bet, and Emersonn's young/raw and possibly injured. |  |

I suppose we'll see based on how Akpom does but I think Hirst could probably offer more too. Certainly he was one of the bright spots about the last months of 24-25. Neither is more than third choice at this level though and those players are the upgrades we would make were we to stay up is to have the whole squad of PL level players.
And as for judging Hirst at Stoke on the back of two games, yeah that's always the best way to do it. |
Watching Hirst for Stoke had a common theme that we saw more often than not with him here last season.
The inability to hold the ball up, his touch poor, confidence low, missing the target with his only chance.

He's played 3 times for Stoke. Bit early to judge him, with a new team and ways of doing things. I'm judging him on last time in the Prem, when he did a decent job (and his overall time for us). [Post edited 3 Sep 13:35]

It's boring but the decision was entirely an accounting decision. Akpom's book value is £2.3M each year. Hirst's book value was less than £500k.
Therefore selling Hirst for £6M on a three-year deal is worth circa £2M a year for accounting purposes.

I'm perhaps having romantic memories of Hirst's good times, but for how he's been in more recent times then £7m is certainly a good price. And for the books it makes sense.

He’s made 3 appearances ffs, in a side that’s lost most of their games.
Though on the flip side it just shows that impatience and flouncing is not just an Ipswich fan thing as some like to make out. Burns also getting pelters from Leicester fans.

I think it does, or at least there’s very little between them. Akpom has been very bright throughout pre-season. We also needed to improve quality in depth which we’ve done by adding Emersonn and Flemming. It was the right call imo.

Or you take it for what it actually is. Players who once were a good part of what we had but over time and injuries has reduced their quality. Its completely natural and normal. Sides who have spent £7 -£10 mill on a striker will of course themselves be looking with their own views. Its a fair bit of cash outside the prem.
Someone shared it the other day. What town players have left since the gamechanger era and been as good as they were for us.
Doesnt mean we dont and cant appreciate what they did whilst here. But also doesnt mean we have to always see them as excellent just because they once were. | |

I agree with you Matt. He needs to be playing and the club would have been wrong to stand in his way. I thought he was undervalued when we sold him, given today’s market.
As it goes, a new challenge may well do him the world of good. He’s a better player than some supporters gave him credit for. My only real concern was he was a little injury prone.
Selfless, hard working he fitted McKenna’s way perfectly. His goal return wasn’t brilliant but given how he brought others into the game and made chances, it wasn’t bad. He scored some crucial ones too.

Was a great player when we were first division, was fun to watch him start building a relationship on the field with chappers, Broadhead and and Burns but after promition that one season he has been pretty limited since. The game against Spurs was his one stand out moment. | | | |

FWIW he didn't miss 'on a plate' against Norwich, the defender made an incredible tackle.

Not only that he cost 1.5M so decent Profit on that, which in terms of real money, would pay for a few years of Palacios wages if nothing else!
There were not many players in the current squad that could have been sold for 3-4 times what we paid for them. In fact, quite the opposite with a few.
Everyone should be happy with the Hirst deal. Good business by the club hopefully we won't be seeing a third striker on the pitch much moving forwards. [Post edited 3 Sep 16:05]
