Emersonn’s hold up play 17:42 - Oct 17 with 3553 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Is often exceptional, going to be a top top player. He did miss a pretty good chance from a corner which was a shame. However, very glad we outbid Hull. Really like him. Great strength, brings it down on his chest and springs an opening or wins a free kick. The class of CBs he’s doing it against as well! Encouraging.

After a performance as gutsy as that I don't want to be too negative about anything, but I think I was watching the same game as you. As for who starts against Forest, I'll leave that to G O'N though.

He only had two behind him, not 3, tough ask, was isolated at times, done pretty well I think, especially in the first half when we were were struggling to keep hold of it.

He's very, very good at that. I used to play as a CB, and you have a big advantage over most CFs because you can nudge and jostle them so easily from behind in those fairly static contests and even if they win the ball you can time a little 'no foul' nudge to screw up any chance they've got of laying it off effectively. The facts that Emi is able to win such a large percentage of those, at his age, in a higher league and, as you say, chest them down so accurately is fantastic. Gonna be one helluva player later in the season, I think.

Let's hope so, the jury's out for me, but I'm so hoping you're spot on.

I love Emersonn. Proper forward. In time he will start creating his own goals.

I really want to see some more progressive passes for him to run onto.

Jury’s out? He’s exceeded expectations by miles IMO!

Created loads of chances like that since the start of the season as well, like the one Enciso side footed last week to keeper.

Yeah thought he was our MoM today. Great hold up play generally across all the matches, a lot seems to stick.

I was unfortunate to sit / stand next to a guy today who did nothing but bemoan under his breath about Emmerson

I’m really not sure what people expected today or any other day from the way our striker plays. Today for me Emersonn was immense. He was solid. He was a pain for defenders. He’s playing against a seasoned England international

The guy is superb and will only get better.

He ran their defenders ragged today and they knew they’d been in a game

Haha madness that people would moan about a loan striker like that in this game , the kid is class and playing superbly for a first few months at the level. Shame he didn’t score one of his last two headers but I’m extremely excited about Emersonn and Outtarra being Ipswich Town players at their young age.

So for all my frustration at the GK recruitment, I’ve got to give them a lot of credit for pretty much every other move we made this summer!

It's mind-bendingly hard to understand how anybody could not be feeling very positive indeed about Emersonn.

The only conclusion I can come to is that it's people whose only criteria for a number 9 is that they are a facsimile of Duncan Ferguson, which is frighteningly narrow minded.

My problem possibly is that I date from 1963 ( first match ) and I tend to judge current day players against those in their respective positions that I've seen over the years. Which may not always be a fair comparison. I'm not comparing him to say a Ray Crawford or Paul Mariner or even Marcus Steward at the peak of their careers, but he's in the top league now and that's what he should aspire too. As you may or may not know, PM was just 23 when he joined us and certainly a better player at the time. Emersonn himself is still young, plenty of time for a good deal of further improvement. If it comes, who knows I might be mentioning him in the same breath as those above, if I'm hopefully still around, I hope I am, on both accounts!

Respectively, you’re comparing different sports.

Go and watch the one he fizzed wide first half as an example, completely self created when we were in a low block against some of the most expensive defenders in the world.

One chance not converted, I will give you that was a good effort, anything more? I'm not trying to give him a right slagging off, I can most certainly see the promise. He can turn round and stuff my words right back down my throat over the next few games, and believe me, I'll be very happy to swallow them.

Anything more? Have you been watching him this season! It wasn’t a chance, it was a half chance at most that he made from absolutely nothing as an isolated striker against Man City! It takes skill to create space like that up top on your own.

Indeed. He brought that down under pressure with his chest*, held off Dias and dragged it past Foden whilst still fending off Dias and got a really well hit shot away from 25 yards - he took control of that really well and you could see the relief on the CBs that it went wide, because they hadn't dealt with him at all.

* It's very noticeable that Emersonn is exceptionally good at working CBs into a position were he can use his chest to control a long ball, either for himself or often to lay it off to a supporting player. He takes control of those situations, whereas many CFs will just be looking to concede the initiative to the CB and just try to jump into them, often completely ineffectively. He's a brilliant prospect and already a very effective CF for us.

I really like him so this isn't as harsh as it may come across... but more importantly he needs to start taking the chances laid on by others . Header from 6 yards against Fulham... another at City...

I think he will get there though.

I like him and he's already got ability but also a really high ceiling, but against Fulham a couple of things he didn't do annoyed me.

Firstly his pressing is often pretty half-hearted - we'll often see Enciso and Maeda sprint past him to press.

Secondly twice Maeda had the ball out wide looking to cross it and Emersonn wasn't in the box nor making much of an effort to get there, the 2nd time Maeda ended up crossing to nobody - these are just simple things which I'm sure our coaches are working on with him as when he gets them he'll be a top player

Frightening thing about Emersonn is how much better he looks even compared to pre season / Sunderland. Fitness and confidence are no doubt factors, but the nous he's shown over the last couple of games especially to back in, win freekicks and territory, use the ball well. Physical, no lack of pace, plays beyond his years in many respects, and doing so in the toughest league in the world. He's got all the hallmarks to be a real handful and he's already proving to be.

Yet to see if he's a natural goalscorer with a predatory instinct, time will tell on that, but if he can hit double figures this season he'll be worth double what we paid by next summer.

I have been watching him, and quite closely. Undoubtedly a promising talent, with as G O'N says still things to learn though thus far he's exceeded his early expectations. And that particular incident was indeed very good play and yes it does take skill to do that, as it did his spin between 2 Palace defenders in that particular game. I'll not point out what I haven't liked as it might be churlish and I look forward to him hitting his strides during the rest of the season. And unlike some who completely rubbish players after 5 minutes, I am giving him the full season to see where it takes him. I was one of very few who stood up for Kasey McAteer in here and elsewhere last season when he was getting dogs abuse. Rest assured whatever happens to " Emmie " over the course of the season, he or anyone else for that matter, won't be getting any of that garbage from me.

Me and my boy were trying to think of an ex prem striker he is most similar too. Who do you think? Potential of lukaku in the future?

He has a lot of raw ingredients giving him a high shelf, he already looks pretty effective for a young overseas player fresh to a new league, that is encouaraging

Once he knows his game better, he will be a serious player

I wasn't actually that impressed with his hold up play against City but he was playing against one of the best sides in the world, if your first touch isn't perfect and your turn or layoff etc isn't perfect, you soon lose the ball and that happened quite a few times when we got into positions to break

When he did get the ball down and ran at City, he caused them problems

If I was ultra criticial of our performance, I'd have liked to see us cause them more problems on fast breaks and I get the impression O'Neil wanted more of that as well

I can't fault the sheer workrate and determination to make the game difficult for City, we ran about 3km more than City did across the game and several of the City players were limping by the end, we certainly made them work for that result
