Biggest under achievers in English football? 08:22 - Oct 25 with 1391 viewsGeoffSentence

Does any club have a better claim to this than Bristol City?

46 years outside the top flight
Joined the league in 1901 but have one runner up position as their best performance and that was before the 1st world war

1 fa cup final defeat, again before the first world war.

Their most notable trophy win was the anglo-scottish cup, unless you count winning, bizarrely, the Welsh cup

And this is for a football club in a city of 500,000 people with no serious regional rivals.

A poor showing.

Britain’s second biggest city, Birmingham’s Birmingham City have been pretty impressive under achievers. Since their founding as Small Heath in the late 1800’s they have no top flight finish higher than 6th, no FA wins and just 2 League Cup victories. That’s woeful for such a big city club.

Other pitiful city clubs include Narridge.

I'd say that one runner up position and one FA Cup final appearance does eclipse a certain one club county side just north of here, and the Anglo-Scottish Cup and Welsh Cup would be about on a par for the Rumbelows Cup and Milk Cup of those eras.

Then again Brizzle is a much bigger city than Nodge, but then again there's also Brizzle Rovers.

I guess it just feels like Bristol City ought to be more fighting at a higher weight, whereas Nodge just doesn't feel like it's got anything to do with football really.

OK, you could go for Nodge's claim to biggest under achievers, but I'll still favour Bristols.

So if there were a cup given for the nation’s biggest under-achieving club, Nodge would even miss out on winning that? Why do they bother at all? In fact, do they bother at all?

Northampton has reasonable potential I reckon, if not underachievers per se.

Sixfields is OK as a base, decent amount of room around it from memory for development. Relatively affluent around Northampton, the ‘Notswolds’ as I believe it’s become known screams premier league WAG if they got there. Nice central location geographically, probably makes it fairly cost efficient for travel costs, and a good location for player recruitment from the north or south, and of course midlands. Big population too, close to 250k in the Town and many more when considering the wider catchment. They do like their togger there and have a good side, but I’ve always thought there’s no reason why a decent size football club couldn’t exist there alongside it.

An interesting one is Sheffield United. Good sized club, they’ve won a first division title (1898) and four FA Cups, the last being in 1925.

So while they don’t rank in the pitiful awards pit like Brizzle C and our dear neighbours, they’ve done zilch in over 100 years and certainly not since we’ve been a professional football club.

My current boss is a Bristol City supporter, and a previous boss's father used to manage them. An absolute irrelevant club. That said, once Lansdowne finally sells to American owners it wouldn't surprise me if they were to get into the PL, all the foundations are there. Ownership and structure is the big issue imo, in many ways they remind me of us 10 years ago.

Plymouth worth a mention, being the largest city never to have reached the top flight.

How about York City?
I know they have plenty of competition oop north in that area, but they've got around 200k population, and have been truly tiny football wise. Once in the second tier was there peak. Almost all their time hovering in fourth tier and conference. On the surface very poor. I guess other sports and other bigger football teams in the area keep them a tiny club in reality.

I live in Northampton, hopefully not for much longer. Like Bristol its a rugby town but with fewer potential supporters to go round.

You also have a lot of competition, Leicester up the road, franchise FC down it, Posh, Cov, and then a little further afield Luton, Cambridge, Oxford. All similar sized too.

But the rugby is what really dominates and a good rugby team at that. With Northampton school for boys offering a conveyer belt of new talent.

Be interesting to see what the Pato consortium does now they have bought them.

Always thought the same about Bristol.
Doncaster is another under-achiever to add to the list. It has never reached tier one, yet has a decent population of 323,000. Probably dominated by the Sheffield clubs and Leeds who are not far away.

Stoke were founder members of the League in 1888 but they have never finished higher than 4th and their only major trophy is the League Cup in 1972.

It’s been fascinating to watch the virtual rebranding of BBC Look East to Look Anywhere apart from Ipswich.

During perhaps our greatest years under Sir Bobby, Look East’s only focus on anything Suffolk was Haverhill. I swear it’s the BBC that’s responsible for the growth of Haverhill from a population of about 5000 to nearly 30,000 today.

I haven’t watched Look East for over 30 years, do they still report from Haverhill, or was that the last pretence of reporting from Suffolk at all.

Another problem with Bristol is the size and there's always something else going on.

The way our football team captivated not only Ipswich, but the whole country could never happen somewhere like Bristol. Largely, because as McKenna succinctly put it, there's not a lot else going on, there isnt even a shopping mall.

The football club is so important to Ipswich and Suffolk. As the book stated, "The Men whole made the Town". It's just not like that in majority of other places (Leeds and that lot up the road are other examples of single club places, but a lot more going on in addition to the football).

Bristol Rovers is way worse than its City neighbours.
Never been in the top flight - 2nd tier was their highest league.
Their heyday was the late fifties - an FA Cup QF.
Their best season was probably 1956/57 where they finished 6th in Div 2.
They had 15 pts from their opening 9 games and sat top.
They have never been top of Div2 since unless you count goal difference after 2 matches.
Are they under achievers though?
I don't think they were ever destined for great things.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

I think there are plenty of rivals for that title.

Newcastle and Tottenham can't be far away.

But Man City may even be it once their achievements while breaking the rules are taken away!

That’s a pertinent point about Bristol. It’s a much more transient population, 10% of it are Uni students for a start and I’d guess a way higher % of people who aren’t ‘locals’. Nonetheless there’s a lot of folk around there, but the rugby thing is definitely a factor. Noticed it driving around North Somerset this summer, local parks had rugby posts for kids. You just wouldn’t see that in Suffolk.

Pretty random to equate that. Yes, Ipswich is boring but there is plenty of other cities that have things going on that are quite good at sports lol

I wasn’t entirely serious…

I did my masters in Bristol and worked as an academy coach at Rovers for 18 months, there’s a lot of passionate football supporters in and around the city, but 500,000 in Bristol isn’t = 500,000 in other parts of the country that’s for sure, for various reasons.

Another contender would be Rochdale, they have never won a thing, the nearest was reaching the first League Cup final and losing to some other nondescript team. They have been promoted twice, the last was last year from the National League, but never as champions.

They’re just a suburb club of Manchester like the other 20 though, certainly a league 2 level.

Nice to see Stockport on the rise again though.
