A crucial period for me.
How we react to the Old Trafford collapse is going to be key. Can we tactically change and can we improve the mindset and concentration. Is our defence strong enough.
There’s a 3 week gap between these fixtures, Everton to Fulham . To go into that with a bad set of results and performances and a weak points tally would be really negative. Essential we do not get overrun. I’m confident we won’t.
We want over 6 points on the board minimum at full time against Fulham.
It starts on Friday night. A result would settle everything down. Another capitulation and we’re wobbling.
Palace and Fulham are having early struggles. Get 4 points off them. And go into the break with 7 points. We’d be on track and in a good place.
That’s the minimum tally for me. I think we can get more, given some of the play in the first half at Old Trafford.

Agree about Palace and Everton (Fulham comes after the international break). We need at least another point on the board from those. The real test of this new team will come, though, when it loses three or four on the bounce – which will happen soon enough. |  |

Yeah taking nine points into the extended break would be ideal. 1.5 points across 6 opening games. Especially given Sunderland, Fulham, palace and Everton are in there.
Theoretically it’s 1.05 PPG to get to the magic 40.
And looking below that’s not even necessary. So 1.5 is high.
For the modern 20-team Premier League (1995/96 onward), the historical data says:
35 points is roughly the long-run average required to finish safely above the relegation places.
36–37 points has usually been a very strong survival target.
38 points was effectively a “safe” benchmark for a very long period — until the 2025/26 season.
40 points has only actually been necessary once in the 20-team era: 2010/11, when Birmingham City were relegated with 39 and Wolves survived with 40.
The extraordinary exception is 2002/03, when West Ham were relegated with 42 points, still the Premier League record for a relegated team in a 38-game season. | |

I think we started to react well in the last 10 mins. Obviously Utd relaxed but the fact we got the last goal, and could potentially have got another after that was positive.
The way I look at yesterday is the it took a slip to gift their first goal, a dubious second goal and an unlucky double deflection for their 4th goal, all compounded by the PFA player of the year scoring a hat-trick for Man Utd to beat us at old Trafford.
The score may have seemed like a thrashing but I think it was a far closer game than it suggests and the issue was a mental one specifically off the back of a very poor ref decision.

Stating the obvious, but if we play the way we did first half yesterday, you’d fancy us picking up points in all of those games. Yes, even Liverpool at home.
But, as you say, we collapsed second half yesterday. Do that and we will struggle to pick up any points. This league is ruthless.
A lot hinges on whether we sign a top quality striker as well. [Post edited 31 Aug 10:43]

I do think that the steaming rain and the pace the match had been played at inhibited our late comeback chances somewhat. Most of both teams were largely jogging for the last 20 minutes.
Not that I think parity would have been achievable, but another goal or two would have been nice and maybe better reflected the balance of much of the game.
It was a bit of a shame we couldn't have got Clarke or Egeli onto the pitch. A bit of extra leg-energy at the end might have paid dividends. | |

… one extreme is a more gung-ho attacking nosebleed techno track… the other a slow ambient house choon representing sitting deep 5 at the back, two mids patrolling the bass. Calm.
For the first half he had the slider in just the right position, as Nunez and Lukic were full of energy and running. And we broke at Man U and carved BIG chances. Whilst still having enough solidity.
Unfortunately DJ GON didn’t assess the changing crowd mood (the match) quick enough just before the Maguire (outrage) goal… he needed to slam the slider to the ambient side fully… as Man U were already beginning to run us ragged and players were tiring. Pallacios on at 50, into a back 5, calm, ambient, robust.
He’ll have to judge the match better on Friday night and I think Pallacios drilled into the system/mix will really help us and DJ GON. Get the mix bang on to suit the vibe.

I think we’d held out till 60, had moved into a back 5 and got Egeli and McAteer on, their energy and running/blocking could have really helped.
A lot of forward players tired very quickly in those conditions. And we lost the higher press. Which Emersonn was also providing. | |
