Town Make Cairney Approach
Thursday, 8th Jan 2026 14:23

Town have made an approach to Fulham regarding veteran skipper Tom Cairney.

As per Sky Sports, the Blues have made contact with the Premier League club regarding the 34-year-old, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

We understand that is correct but that the potential deal has moved no further than that as it stands.

Nottingham-born Cairney was with the Leeds United academy before moving on to Hull City in 2007 and it was with the Tigers where he made his breakthrough into senior football.

In 2013, he moved on to Blackburn, initially on loan, before departing for Fulham in 2015 where he has remained ever since.

Cairney, who is 6ft 1in tall, won two full Scotland caps having previously played at U19 and U21 levels.

Central midfield is an area the Blues are known to be looking to strengthen in this window.

Could be worth a punt at the right price. His Wiki shows 44 goals in ten years for Fulham. But Prem players don't come cheap. But would be a good acquisition to return to the Prem with. Therefore allowing CH to return to Wycombe on loan and develop further. This transfer window will be difficult to find the right blend.

Blues1 sorry to have to explain it to you. Lol.

Our skipper when we signed Lewis Travers was Sam morsy and he was just about to hit a 2 game ban. So we signed LT to cover him for that time out. I was suggesting that this signing is of similar ilk. Azor is 1 booking away from a 2 game ban and thus be bring in TC to cover us predominantly. Anything else we get from him is a bonus. Does that make sense to you?

RIP Aaaaah! Thats what you meant. OK makes sense now, although if we are going to bring him in to do as little as that, no thanks. This guy would be the starter we crave at CMF to take the fitness pressure off the others, Cajuste etc

blues1, Think you will find he is 1 yellow of a 2 match ban, so maybe revisit your comment/ facts.

He is a quality player but as he's still playing regularly for Fulham I would be very surprised if we were able to sign him. I'm not sure if he's played in the defensive midfield role much but I think he could. However, he's not going to sign to be cover for Matusiwa. They could play together though as he's better than Cajuste and Taylor in my opinion.

He would be a quality addition in an area that we need to strengthen. He also scores goals from midfield which would be very welcome. A player of some pedigree who says he wants to remain at Fulham. It’ll be interesting to see whether this develops any further

Good player although as a prem club captain his wages will be substantially higher than anyone currently at the club

Short term maybe, long term obviously not. Question is, do we want short termers or long termers? I can see the value in a short term goalscorer to fire us over the line for sure. I'm having more trouble seeing the value in any other position. One things for definite though, if he did arrive, he'd certainly get my backing, as all new arrivals do, whatever my opinion of the signing.

Experienced in the prem, been captain for Fulham for a while, sounds good to me!

If we have money to spend and want younger cover for Matusiwa, we should look at Tochi Chukwuani. He's 22 and plays in the 6 role for Sturm Graz.. might be useful...?

Be a good signing, if only to get us over the line.

ArnieM, don't let it get to you, it's just peoples opinions, yours are as valuable as anyone elses including mine. You've only got to look at the likes of blueboy81 and darkhorse28, the number of downvotes they get just because posters have seen their names without often bothering to read what they've put. Continue to post, however many downvotes you get. You at least won't get one from me as I never have or will downvote any post, no matter how strongly I disagree with it, just a personal thing, others are entitled to do as they wish.

Tom Cairney is still performing to a high level in the premier league so people suggesting he's coming hear to cover for Matusiwa are having a laugh. At the moment Matusiwa is the only automatic choice in our midfield it's more likely he would be playing a more attacking role as both Taylor and Cajuste have failed to really nail down that position. He would be an outstanding signing if we signed him but i cannot see it happening he would probably want to stay in London but if the money's right you never know.

Linkboy13, I think you're correct in saying he wouldn't be coming here as cover for AM. I use a stats site regularly ( I have certainly found out not everyone likes them in here, but they reflect largely facts not opinions ) and this particular one for a very good summing up of a players overall strengths and weaknesses which they helpfully include at the bottom of the profile. Tom Cairney is noted as having one particular weakness " Defensive contribution " ! On the plus side they list particular strengths as " Passing " and " finishing ". Also a style of play is included which says " gets fouled often ", " Likes to play short passes " and " does not dive into tackles ".

I'm sorry above posters, you can't compare Tom Cairney with Lewis Travis - one is a quality Premier League player, and is certainly better than what we currently have.

Some of our fickle fans most of which are on here really do not deserve a premier league club at all. Moan there’s no signings then moan it’s not a 30 million quid striker or player I swear people have their head up the ar$e playing championship manager still. This guys technically a brilliant signing for us I’d say less of a gamble than Phillips was and he’s still played games in a higher divisions for a team in 9th place!! I said the other day to a fellow fan people seem to think getting players in is easy in January when it’s the hardest window to negotiate in. No one near the top of a league or bottom will want to sell their best players due to promotion or relegation costing so much and if we go get someone in the lower league people on here yet again moan it’s not someone costing loads of money. I remember the same fans moaning signing Delap look how that worked out.
