Town Neil Deal Progressing Monday, 26th Jan 2026 13:00 TWTD understands Town’s move to sign Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil is progressing and should be confirmed within the next 48 hours.
The 24-year-old, who is believed to be at the club for a medical and to complete the formalities regarding his loan switch, looks set to become the club’s second addition of the January window following the signing of Anis Mehmeti from Bristol City on Friday.
News of the Blues’ interest in Neil emerged on Saturday, Town subsequently firming up their approach and seeing off opposition from Rangers and West Ham United with Sheffield United also believed to have been keen.
Black Cats head coach Regis Le Bris revealed after their 3-1 defeat to the Hammers that Neil, who is out of contract in the summer, was expected to depart early this week and we understand it was a move to Town that the Frenchman was referring to.
Neil, who skippered the club in 2024/25, has been out of favour this season, making only three sub appearances in the Premier League.
Town have been on the lookout for another midfielder during this window and made an approach to Fulham for skipper Tom Cairney, who subsequently signed a new deal with the Cottagers.
Former England U20 international Neil has played all his football for Sunderland having come through their academy, making a total of 182 starts, among them last season’s play-off final, and 18 sub appearances, scoring 12 goals.

What a signing if true. These are the type of players in Football Manager games that you have to cheat a little to recruit lol. One of the most valuable Championship players last year, and said to be destined for the Prem. What's he worth...£15-20m? He's the 'other Hackney' essentially. What a coup if we can get him. https://fminside.net/players/7

Billm Do agree with you about going back to no transfer window, but can sign players right from june until March. Was a much better way of doing it

Definitely a decent player there, I'm just scratching my head trying to work out the midfield permutations/possibilities. If we start by taking out Nunez who we signed as principly a central midfielder, and leave him in the " 10 " when fit again of course, that still leaves Matusiwa, Cajuste, Taylor, Mehmeti and Neil ( assuming... ). I can't for one moment think a guy who's just turned 24 and at a PL club is going to accept swapping a bench at PL level for a bench at Championship level, as cover for a CDM. Unless he has very little ambition, ( which I hope isn't the case, and I don't think can be ). So are we going to see what KM floated was possible when he teased everyone with the thought that had things worked out, Matusiwa and Morsy could have formed the midfield together? Matusiwa & Neil? If so, what about Mehmeti especially as a new signing and Taylor and Cajuste? KM must have something up his sleeve, I'll be interested to see what it is. Maybe horses for courses? One things for certain, we are no longer short of midfielders!

Oh and sorry, I forgot to add, re the ongoing striker debate, It's obvious we are looking for one as we wouldn't have spoken to Bamford if we weren't, hadn't thought of that before! Let's see what happens over the next 7 days.

CDM/CM Taylor Catjust Matusiwa Dan Neal Nunez can play CDM CM CAM Mehmeti Can play LW/LM RW/RM CM/CAM So we are good as will use Mehmeti & Nunez N10 CAM The rest at CDM We are looking at strikers but for example if our highest Rated player is 150/200 (Football manager talk) what striker that can score 10-15+ goals in the prem & would wanna drop down to the championship & any top championship striker that can score 20+ goals might not be good for the prem and we don’t wanna sign them then not use them next season So we might not get one, hope so

rodthegasman midfielders are the engine room of any Team. Look at what we achieved with Sami and Mass! Agree though about a striker although January is a tough window. Should have pushed the boat out in the summer to recruit permanantly. Unfortunately the summer signings up front have been a big disappointment. Usually players allowed out on loan are done so for a reason. Azon and Akpom are good examples!!

Jas0999. Its a loan bcse thst makes total sense. If hexperforms we' ll sign him in the, summer, in a free. If not we can part ways. My guess is it'll be the former. Getcur point about putting himself in the shop window for others, ut wed likely be in the driving seat, with him already here.

Stato: I think it's more likely Neill will partner Matusiwa ,with Taylor as a very able backup. This might mean we see a bit less of Cajuste. But I might be totally wrong.

To those continually using every post about a,signing to go on about needing a striker? While a other would be good. We're the 2nd top scorers in the lge. So its hardly the issue some think. And bcse of the way we score our goals, in thst we dint score many by putting the ball across the area for our strikers, it wouldnt matter who we signed. They wouldnt score many goals. Also, Akpom showed againstcOxford, that if we do put the ball across the box he'll score goals. Was given justx1copporotynity in thst match and scored. Of course, he needs to be fit 1st. Sizes, by all means let's sign another striker, but dont expect a,flood of goals, from them.

GTRKing, I doubt any striker than can score 10/15 + goals in the PL would want to drop down to the Championship. We just need one good one, doesn't matter what league he comes out of. It's a rather large world out there. Just have to trust whatever's going on behind closed doors, as im sure something is.

Just one other thing on the striker debate ( I'll be glad when its 7pm next Monday! ). As many have of course correctly pointed out, KM simply never changes his system of playing, which according to many doesn't rely on the " strikers" to carry the goalscoring load. May I direct you to just last season, easily the most relevant one to draw facts from ( not opinions or guesses ), under the very same KM sytem. We scored 36 league goals, 12 of which ( exactly one third ) were scored by one Liam Delap, who unless my memory has severely failed me, was a striker. 4 times more than anyone else. In addition his striker replacement, George Hirst, when called upon added another 3, and finished only 1 behind the second top scorer. Had they have managed another 3 between them they'd have notched up 50% of our league goals. I would add that had the GH of last season turned up to this seasons party, this would be a debate no one would be having, but he hasn't unfortunately. In addition to that and back to this season. We have quite probably the best 2 wide left men in the division this season, very fortunately, as not only are they doing their jobs, they are pretty much doing those of the strikers too. That's my case for a new ( better than what we have, can score and hold the ball up ), striker. I await the case for the no new striker needed posters. Happy to have a friendly debate on this. There are no winners or losers, as I'm absolutely positive we all want the same thing, a very successful ITFC!

Another midget in CM … no wonder we can’t compete physically. Surprised we didn’t sign another winger as we don’t have many to choose from. We need a striker, not another average squad player.

@Uefablue.......Dan Neil a midget ,he's 5ft 10. !!
armchaircritic59 added 23:56 - Jan 26
Gforce, I swear some peoples idea of a midget in here, is anything under 6ft 3ins! Height is a small component of what makes a combative player. Just ask those who had the misfortune to cross Billy Bremners path at Leeds back in the day, and many others. Matusiwa isn't tall, but he's built like a rock.

People are talking about loan and money. West Ham offered £7m transfer fee, Rangers wanted him too, but I understand he's coming here on loan until his contract expires in June with the commitment to stay if we go up. So effectively, we have him for nothing and he's chosen to be here because he wants to be part of something positive, and not stuck in a relegation fight with West Ham. I think we should be congratulating the Club hugely not challenging the methods

I'm sure some of the deals (both ones we hear about or never hear about because they fall by the wayside) have been on the back burner for months, some even years. Some deals will try and fail and be tried again several times over for years. Philogene for starters. I'm sure some people on here think the club meet down the pub last minute, have a quick chat and pint, realise they need players and then skim down a few printouts and pick one.

I am all for this signing, but, that puts us at 5 loan signings the maximum you are allowed in a match day squad. So any new striker may have to be a permanent signing, unless we look to buy Kipre now, or try and end an existing loan deal. Of course we could always leave on rotation one if the loan players out of the squad each match. This also means the highly rated Chelsea lad who had predominently joined the u21 squad on loan with option to purchase would have to take a squad place if he excelled and we wanted to play him which also puts pressure on the rules for matchdsy squad.
