Flemming Nets as Blues Beat Espanyol
Friday, 2nd Oct 2026 15:30

Town beat Espanyol 1-0 in their behind-closed-doors training game at the La Liga club’s RCDE Stadium this morning, Zian Flemming scoring the goal in the first half.

Few details other than the scoreline and scorer have emerged in the Spanish media with both clubs keeping the game a very low-key affair.

Given the number of players away, the first team will have been augmented by U21s with Charlie Wood, Josh Lewis and Leon Elliott having both posted on social media from the stadium.

Speaking prior to the international break, manager Gary O’Neil outlined his plans for the hiatus, among them this week’s Spanish training camp.

“The guys will have a few days off,” he said. “We will get together for that block in the middle for some training away and then we will have a normal week running into Fulham.

“Some will be back even later than that, some are back as late as the Wednesday before Fulham.

“I don’t like international breaks as you are always looking at the line-ups and seeing who is playing and if they have come off at any point.

“So I’ll be at home having my fingers crossed for three weeks hoping that everyone makes it through their games OK.”

Good to keep those not on international duty, in tip top condition, & look at fringe players, & a goals a confidence boost no matter if its a friendly. Fleming will play an important part this season, I'm certain of it. Solid addition to the team.

Good minutes against solid opposition. Flemming looks a great signing

Apparently it turns out it was an own goal.

Good for the players to get a decent run out. But this international break is far too long if we’re having to have friendlies in October…

Well a win against a La Liga side at their own stadium, whatever the circumstances isn't to be sniffed at. They're likely to be rather low in the table come the end of season, but they aren't mugs. Nice workout for the fringe players and a few regulars.

Ive seen a few conflicting reports with some saying it was a Flemming goal and some saying it was an own goal. Regardless of who scored great to get a win against a good La Liga side and even better for those that haven't gone away for international duty to get some more pitch minutes instead of just on the training ground (and even a few of the U21s)
