McKenna: We Should Have Had Another Two Penalties
Saturday, 31st Jan 2026 18:25

Town boss Kieran McKenna felt the Blues should have been awarded two more penalties during their 1-1 draw with Preston North End at Portman Road.

The Lilywhites went ahead through Lewis Gibson on 72, but top scorer Jack Clarke claimed a point for Town from the spot two minutes into injury time to take his tally for the season to 12, four of them penalties, more than anyone else in the Championship.

However, the former Sunderland man, who had been fouled for that spot-kick, was shoved over again before the end, which manager McKenna thought ought to have resulted in referee John Busby awarding another penalty, as should an incident moments afterwards.

Asked whether he believed his side should have been given another penalty, McKenna said: “I think we should have had another two, to be honest. The second one, the shove on Jack Clarke as he comes into the box, someone comes in and crashes into him from behind is a clear pen.

“And for me, the one that came back to Jack Clarke and he tried to pop it round the corner to Chuba [Akpom] in the box, the midfielder’s there with his arm out and moves his arm towards the ball and knocks it away from Chuba, and the referee’s 10 yards away and staring straight at it.

“A lot at the end of that game, there were two bits to the game. I take big, big, big positives in our reaction to going 1-0 down and the way that we pushed for the equaliser.

“For me, what the players showed out there today, what the crowd showed when they stuck together in that adversity, for me it was a comeback win. We spoke about that this week and our need to react better to going 1-0 down.

“I thought today the reaction was outstanding on the pitch and in the stands, and I’m disappointed that it didn’t end up with getting a win.

“I thought the players gave everything to get that, but we have to take the positives from the point.”

It wasn’t the first time the Blues have struggled to break down a team defending in depth, the Lancastrians having put in a similar display as they ground out a 1-0 victory over Town at Deepdale in August.

“I think the context of the game was clear,” McKenna continued. “It’s difficult, it doesn’t matter if it’s at Portman Road today or it’s at Anfield, if it’s at Arsenal, if a team comes and defends really, really deep with a strong back five, putting an extra midfielder into the team.

“They did a really good job, it’s not a criticism, they came with a game plan, defended really, really deep, had a good threat with [Daniel] Jebbison, you know they’re going to be a threat on their set plays, then it’s a big, big challenge and it’s hard.

“It’s hard for the players and hard for the crowd because they want to see an open, exciting game but it’s probably not going to be that.

“If you get the early goal, then possibly it might open up, but if you don’t it’s going to be difficult.

“We didn’t pass that test today, that’s the reality. I think we did some good things in the first half, had some good situations, weren’t quite clinical enough. Also missed some moments to get the extra body in the box or to get across people in the box to go and get the goal.

“But they also had a counter-threat through the game. We didn’t quite manage to ever get on top of that, their striker [Jebbison] running down the channels.

“And then the real frustration was to concede from the set play because we’ve spoken a lot this year about giving ourselves 90-plus minutes to win the game and I think in that game, as much as you want to go for it and you’re thinking a lot about how we break the defence down, it’s really important to keep the clean sheet and then give yourself the whole game to win it.

“So we’re really frustrated to concede the set play. I think there’s a lot that we can take from that part of the game. Of course, it’s not new but just because you’ve been through it before, it doesn’t mean that you can reflect on it and then you’re going to be perfect, it’s a work in progress.

“I think we have made some good strides against deep teams, against back fives who defend really deep in the box. We didn’t manage to execute well enough today or control their threat as well as we would have liked, but we’ll reflect on that and the only thing to do on that is keep working to improve.”

The Blues boss was pleased with Anis Mehmeti’s performance on his full debut for the club.

“I thought he was a positive,” the Northern Irishman added. “It’s never easy coming into a new team and the context of a game like that as well is not easy because there’s certainly not loads of space for you to operate.

“But some really good moments. A lovely pass for Jack Clarke in the first half, lovely pass for George Hirst in the second half, maybe two of our clearest chances.

“I thought his counter-pressure was really, really good as well and he’s going to bring us good things, and I’m sure he’ll only improve as well.”

McKenna says striker Ivan Azon was subbed at half-time as he was feeling unwell: “He had a really back headache.”

Regarding forward Sammie Szmodics, a target of Derby and Wrexham, being left out of the squad, he added: “There’s not too much change from what we said yesterday. There’s been some offers, nothing that the club sees as acceptable. If that doesn’t change, he’ll be here come Tuesday.

“But we thought in light of that and a few other things, it was better to go with the other players today.”

I will admit that we were average throughout the match. The build up was slow from the back and we did not create much. The opposition seem to know how to play against us .Saying all that I do believe Kieran will take us up.With the next lot of games away I feel that we will be able to attack more effectively as the opposition will not be so defensive.
Final comment on today’s match is about the Referee,he wasn’t very good!!!!!!!!!

Got up in the early hours (New Zealand time) to watch that pile of dogshit! Expected a big reaction after Blades debacle. Back to usual stuff, no passion, creativity and downright pedestrian at times. Hirst is shot, should have put at least two away. We appear to be sorely missing Nunez. Some of these players look bang average. Play offs at best I think, where we will bottle it. This isnt the 'band of brothers' from a couple of years back. McKenna has few ideas with the low block.

I know it will always sound like sour grapes, but I think McKenna is right about the penalties. I believe having just awarded one, the referee bottled it for the other two.

Let’s not forget that Preston knew exactly what they were doing, they are experts at spoiling games. Ipswich are not the only club they’ve done it to, there’s a graveyard of bones behind them, belonging to much better footballing sides than Presto will ever be.

Poet, you don't always win football matches purely by being the better footballing side. Sometimes you need to tough it out, something we're not too good at these days. Teams such as Preston are going to come here and employ the tactics that they think are best suited for them to take something from the match. It's up to us to get the better of them, not expect gift wrapped presents.

Northland oracle:
My point us McKenna's sides move the ball far ti slowly about the pitch to gave any chance of beating a lo block. He never changes his team's approach! To beat a lo block you need to pull that defence about, quickly. Make them commit . Pissing about in our half with tippy tappy side to side passing looks goid on possession stats but off sod all threat. You'd think he'd learn by now eouldbt you, to try something different. I think k McKenna's tactical nouce is way short of where it needs to be and im asking myself more and more these days, " what coukd a more experienced manager do with this group of players?"

McKenna shut up about the 2 bloody penalties. Just admit teams know how to play against us and you have been sussed out also like I told fellow fans on here your a one - trick- pony and why the slow passing football. I think you should keep Sammie and get rid of hirst he is utter crap so why can you not see it ffs

Boro didn’t have a problem dealing with Preston’s low block and direct counter attacking. They scored 4 and kept a clean sheet. Just saying.

Sorry, I've forgotten to move with the times and conform to the modern day bo**cks that blights this sport. Of course all three were penalties, if diving, simulation, minimal contact, and the ball striking the chest counts as handball!! At my age I'm finding it difficult to adopt the 'monkey see monkey do' attitude and acknowledge that in this game, with abhorrent softies.... cheats prosper.

I would fire our striking coaches as they obviously havent told our strikers they are aloud shoot at goal from outside the box.

Northstandoracle.........Mckenna is responsible for the the team selection, the tactics, the speed of tempo ectc. He can make changes at any time....and didn't. This isn't a 'knee jerk reaction' by fans as many have expressed this frustration at the lack of proactivity by the manager throughout the past two seasons. We were struggling to create anything and Preston looked the far likelier winners. Mckenna only changed things, reactively, when we went 1 behind. Almost too little too late. The players line up in his formation, they play the way he wants to play.

For what it’s worth we were well below par with little urgency. The opposition just let the ball go to OShea and he does the rest letting them get behind the ball. Why we cannot go for the throat from the first minute I do not understand. I am disappointed with McKennas analysis but surely we can be quicker in the build up. Onwards and upwards.

Everyone says "sign a bloody striker" as if it is somehow a clever new idea and as if every other side in the country isn't trying to do the same. Arsenal have struggled to do that for years. To say we haven't signed a decent striker since Delap is crazy given he was an amazing signing last season. If they blow the budget one someone who doesn't fit the system they will get grief. Also Hirst is getting into positions to score but his confidence is low, not helped by audible groans every time he does anything. I think our "supporters" need to up the energy and help the side out. Confidence is what helps players not snatch at the chances they do get. Most expensive squad doesn't always equal success. Look at Southampton. Leicester or even Chelsea etc. People questioning KcKenna are foolish. Especially those criticising HIM for not signing a striker. He doesn't handle transfers!

Problem is they aren't anywhere near good enough for top end of championship, similar to hirst and szmodics. 50 million worth of players but not quality

Notwithstanding we desperately need a striker to score some goals, our biggest downfall is our ridiculously slow playing out from the back. I'm a big fan of playing out from the back and not hoofing it, much as we did in L1 promotion. It's painful to watch this season, the opposition has all the time in the world to reset their defensive unit. Then we have no one to stick the ball in the net when we do manage to get through. McK is obviously bereft of ideas, so maybe getting to the point where a change is needed.

AYACCA: "Best manager since Burley, hope he stays a long time and builds something like Robson and Burley did." I do agree and that's why I marked you up, but even good managers need to be open to adapting where necessary.

People, nothing new about " Low Blocks " been going on since football was invented. Back in the day we just called it playing defensively, exactly the same. It appears to me defensive coaching has improved more than attacking coaching. It really shoudn't be that difficult to beat it.

Oh and relegation clause or not built into KM's contract, I guess he won't be appearing on any street corners soon with a begging bowl. He's still a very, very well paid manager, taking charge of a very very well paid, expensively put together squad at Championship level. Does that absolutely guarantee success, nope, but it sure should help.

Visiting teams, could you just turn up at PR, roll over and let us score 5 or 6 like the championship is supposed to do.
Its very annoying when you don’t because then all the wannabe managers come on here spouting their very enlightening footballing knowledge.

barrystedmunds, it should be written in visiting teams contracts. Oh it's Ipswich away, let's just stand around and admire!
