Davis: That's Not Our Game
Sunday, 22nd Feb 2026 10:51 by Kallum Brisset

Town defender Leif Davis says he fully understands supporters’ frustrations after the Blues lost further ground on the Championship’s top two following a 5-3 defeat to Wrexham on Saturday.

Coventry City returned to the top of the table with victory at West Bromwich Albion, while Middlesbrough extended their lead over Town to eight points with a goalless home draw with Oxford United.

The fourth-placed Blues also find themselves behind Millwall, but do hold two games in hand on the trio of sides directly above them in the Championship table.

Davis admitted the number of goals conceded at Wrexham was uncharacteristic, and that the game was not managed well after Cédric Kipré had given Town the lead early in the second half.

“That’s not a thing for us, conceding five goals,” he said. “That’s not our game and we know better than that. In my time at the club in the Championship, we haven’t conceded that many goals.

“We shouldn’t with the defensive record that we’ve got, how good we are defensively and how good we’ve been defensively. It was those moments in the game where you can’t switch off and everyone’s got to be together in that part of the game.

“We can’t leave the game free and wide open, especially when we go 3-2 up. We have to be together, compact and do everything we can to stop that.

“We knew how much of a counter-threat they are with Kieffer [Moore], who we’ve had and we know how he likes to play. That’s his strength — he’s a big target man, good player and can get the ball to feet. His first goal was a great strike but the second goal, we looked lethargic and we like we weren’t at the races.

“We can’t dwell on it too much because if we dwell on it then it’s going to affect that game on Tuesday night against Watford.”

One of the biggest criticisms of Kieran McKenna’s side this season has been their ability to respond to in-game setbacks, with it being nearly two years since the Blues won from behind.

Town have failed to win any of the 15 matches in all competitions in which they have trailed, but Davis insists there is enough character within the group.

He said: “I would say there is. That’s why we came from behind, scored that third goal and went 3-2 up.

“You can’t take your foot off the pedal, which I feel as though we did a little bit in the second half when we scored the third goal. We’ve got to keep driving each other, reset and think the game is still 0-0 and do everything we can to be out there as a team and push together.

“There’s 11 players on the pitch, we’ve all got to do a job and help each other along the game. Even the lads that come off the bench, they know what job they have to do and they’ve got to bring the energy off the bench as well.

“It’s the first time in the Championship for some people, still learning and adapting to it. It might take a few seasons, it could take a season to fully understand it.

“This and the Premier League are two of the toughest leagues in the world. You’ve seen teams come down and struggle to get back up to the Premier League because it’s a very tough league.

“That’s the heart you’ve got to show to get out of this league, you’ve got to fight for every first and second ball and whatever it’s got to take on the pitch.

“It could be one of the rashest games you’ve seen, but you’ve got to work for it and fight for it like we did at Derby. We didn’t give up on that game until the final whistle blew.”

Next up for the Blues is another quick away trip on the horizon to Watford, who remain in the play-off hunt themselves despite recently going seven Championship matches without a win.

Davis reiterated that the immediate focus will go no further than Tuesday’s clash at Vicarage Road.

“It’s a good group that know not to look at the table,” the 26-year-old said. “We’ve got to take it game by game, you can’t look too far ahead of yourself.

“We’ve been in a similar position before where we are the chasing team. Personally, I would rather be in that position chasing than all the pressure being on us up there, but that’s our job to do that on the pitch.

“We want to do it for the fans as well, who have been incredible all year. There’s still 15 games to go, a lot of games and a lot of points to play for. We’ve just got to take it game by game and do everything we can to get the game put right on Tuesday night.”

The team and the supporters have just got to learn lessons and move on. Watford is coming up. I hope to see a better attitude. I am sure we will.

I remember the sight of Ed Sheeran celebrating our second there and Elton John next to him looking like he was chewing a wasp. Ha,ha.

I like Leif and I don't think he's one to take his foot of the gas. Of course he makes mistakes but we can't question his commitment. However a few others are starting to think that because we have the best squad we are entitled to win games just by turning up and walking about. And currently there is not a lot of leadership being shown by the captain. He's a good player but must be at it 100% or how can he expect the others to be. Making plans for the play-offs now!!! Still that will be fun

Fails to win any of the 15 games we’ve Ben behind in. Shocking considering our squad depth. Have to look very closely at the leadership group on the pitch - clearly lacking. Questions also need to be asked at the managers tactics and inability to change things around. Poor from McKenna.

Yesterday eas a horribke resuktand a poor performance fir which Oshea should take most if the blame having gifted 3 goals to Wrexham. we all understand slio ups happen and yes there would be grumbles even if we were top og the lesgue but the frustrstion has been building all season and that completely explauns whete all the current comments are coming from.
Yes there are a few woke weaklungs on here who don't want players criticised on this platform. There are a few more who spit hate if you dare to question the underperformung McKenna but the vast majority want to read and share mixed views and perhaos more importantly thats what aPhil wants too.
At the end of the season McKenna gioes if we din't get promoted. Ashton has been way ti chummy with McKenna and needs to now show he is the boss or he goes too. Recruitent has been a mixed bag with far more bad calls than goid ones. The recruitment team needs changing NOW and Ashton must not dither to the end of the season.
We have a £200m squad regularly dropping pounts to sides like Wrexham who have a squad below £100m as do Middlesboro. Is that the fault of the manager or the recruitment team ? Only the haooy clappers claim that neither are to blame and all bad results must be ignored because we once had bad owners and tier 3 footbalk. They are too thick to realuse that is such a lame argument that isrejected by the vast majority.
EVERY seaon that begins with a bad start the weaklings start arguing there are 40 games still to plsy. They are blinkered to the over rotation and poor tactics while there are pekters thrown at anyone who dares point out that the Emoeror has no clothes. So well done all those who callled it early and ignired the haters. I din't agree with everything that camp says but I don't call out other pisters as the diwn arrows are enough.

Of thats " not our gane", then explain why the first choice 11 had 2 weeks off from games to prepare for yesterday's game and looked like bloody strangers for the most part.

No energy
No desire
Over complicated approach to getting the ball in Wrexhams box, if at all.
Absolutely SHOCKING defending and CLOSING DOWN. Its BASIC football McKenna, f uvking basic football!

Time for a change at the top and that may as well include Mr Ashton for his cheque book approach to recruitment.

I would personally make Azor captain. He showed how passionate he is,in that on field bust up with Philogene. He is also probably our most consistent player, who scores 7+/10 every week.

I had no issue with us getting relegated from the premiership, it was a big ask. Ihave questioned Mcks tactical invention/flexibility since the Man Utd away game last season. Playing against 10 men, losing and desperately needing the points to stay in touch, Mck opted to keep doing the same thing, expecting a different outcome. Since then I have found his tactics wanting on numerous occasions. Slow and laborious build up play, constant rotation, often fielding players out of position. A stubbornness to adapt tactics or formation. From an entertainment point of view, the Sheff Utd(h), Coventry(h and a) and Derby(a) games aside, I have found the matches quite difficult to watch. I am not privvy to whom is responsible for recruitment but It has been incredibly poor.No issue that a centre forward option wasnt available in the last transfer window. But they knew Delap was leaving long before the Premiership relegation had been confirmed.....and yet it was never addressed.

However, having wittered above.......I cant hold Mck accountable for yesterdays debacle. The players need to dig in their pockets and pay for the fans coach fare. The attitude was an absolute joke. Too many fairweather players who didnt fancy the conditions and werent up for the battle.

We jogged back into position for the first goal. Kipre had no player to mark, should have come across. Walton near post - disappointed. Second and third goals, huge gaps in centre midfield which they jogged through.

Guys we have got what we have got in terms of players and to be fair to them Wrexham played out of their skins yesterday and are rightly proud of their performance, that doesn't make us a bad team, although a few players had a very bad day! Town should concentrate on what they can do about it, with what they have and a good start would be to play a settled side, I hear all this nonsense about too many games, they are supposed to be professional athletes.
I'm pretty sure we will see a different team again on Tuesday, what I want to see is 11 players who want to win the game and a prepared to fight for it, the team lacks leadership on the pitch, if I see O'shea running with his arm raised once more and not tackling I shall scream!!! Basics, others have mentioned it, do the basics, fans pay good money to watch you, give then value for money. Away from home defend first and attack on the break, other teams do it to us!!!

The club roll players out same old same old, we haven't got the mentality to fight and scrap and win when losing we have been abysmal on our travels this season apart from a couple of games. I wonder if we fail to at least get to the play off final it will bring changes.

Just seen all the goals again, O'Shea at fault for all x 5, x 4 directly his fault.
The reason McKenna won't drop him is because he's the Captain......he shouldn't even be that. Wrong decision again. He just stood there when the ball came over and marked no one and did not organise the defence - but this is normal for him.

Stato right again.
We are all fedup with the excuses.........no desire, no determination, no forward passing, no change in tactics, lazy at times, players like comfort too much, they know they will probably be on the bench next game so no incentive to play really well - note McKenna.
I do wonder if any of them really want promotion as they will mostly be out of a job and have to move elsewhere.

Shame Moore and Broadhead are no longer with us!
Sadly the Band of Brothers running through adversity is long gone.
Wrexham wanted it more which is a sad indictment when you consider our position in the table with games in hand.
A missed opportunity i'm afraid.
I really thought we'd get a result yesterday and now fear for the outcome of tuesday's match with Watford.
Please get out there and prove us wrong!

As ive said many times on here the team lacks character. If you have played the game you will know that leadership comes from all over the pitch you can't blame the captain . I think because he's been at the club longer and his loyalty Leif Davis should have been given the captaincy but as i say you need leadership all over the pitch.
