Szmodics Appearance Clause Triggered
Wednesday, 7th Oct 2026 11:25

Forward Sammie Szmodics has reportedly already hit the appearance mark required to make his current loan deal a permanent switch at the end of the season.

The Irish international rejoined the Rams in August having spent the second half of last season at Pride Park working under his former Blackburn boss John Eustace.

Szmodics, 31, has made six starts and one sub appearance in the Championship this season which Derbyshire Live says is enough to trigger the clause which will make the move permanent next summer.

As previously reported, the Rams will pay a fee of £2.7 million but with that figure doubling to £5.4 million should they win promotion to the Premier League.

Szmodics, whose Town contract runs until the summer of 2028, joined the Blues in the summer of 2024 from Blackburn for £9 million.

He made 22 starts and 17 sub appearances for Town, scoring five goals, all but one in the 2024/25 Premier League season.

£2.7m it is then. They can't all be groundbreaking, but he was a right disappointment

We might get lucky especially now the playoffs are up to 8 although Derbys start hasn’t exactly started with a bang. They’ve had a lot of injuries so I’d expect them to pick up when players are back.

Real shame about Sammie, he was probably the signing I was most excited about at the start of the 24/25 season.

Ouch, we signed him for £9m up to £11m with add ons.

That wasn't a great bit of business unfortunately.

Szmodics was the one signing that I never really understood.

A good player whose goalscoring was at its best when playing as a second striker, a formation that clearly was never going to be utilised.

No complaints from me, just an observation.

I think he was a bad buy from McKenna to be honest. I think he turned out to be a bad egg in the dressing room .very critical of other players , when he wasn’t so good himself and became a big sick note with injuries

Some players work out, some dont. I always thought Sammy had a touch of class and is unfortunate that it did not come together.
I wish him well at Derby.

I feel like a £6.3 million pound loss isn't too bad

He was unlucky with injuries and scored four in the prem; including the winning goal at Spurs in a season where we didn't win many games

Echoing what others have said on here I thought we'd pulled off a great signing and was excited but it just didn't work out.

Normally wish our former players well but I'll pass this time

Always gave one hundred percent so im not going to slag the guy off . Don't think McKenna ever really fancied him. If he gets a long run with no injuries he will score goals for Derby.

Excellent, best for everyone. Wouldn't stand a chance of getting in the side here now. Not my favourite guy, but no need to be nasty here. Best of luck for the future Sammy.
