This is not about the biggest waste of money or anything like that but about the player we brought in that you thought would be a perfect fit and really do it for us.

My nomination: Stuart Slater.

Looked a cracking little player at West Ham. Born in Sudbury, 23/24 years old, brought in for £750k by John Lyall from Celtic who knew a good footballer when he saw one. What was not to like? A steal.

Turned out to be a robbery. Basically, he wasn’t very good and his career dribbled away.

Record signing with great things expected but for me never lived up to my expectations. Decent enough player, but given that SBR didn't sign many players and that he came here as our record signing I was expecting him to come in and make a great team even better. But it never happened and sadly he neverr really tied down a regular starting slot - which for a record signing was disappointing.

Shefki Kuqi's return on loan in 2008. I still remember the roar of the crowd when he came on. The excitement of my favourite player returning.

4 appearances, zero goals.

Grant Ward. Hat trick 1st game and I'm thinking this is what we've been missing.

After that, mostly underwhelming

He sprung to mind when I saw the thread.
Never really hit any consistency and was a sub for the most part if I remember correctly.
Sam Parkin as already mentioned. Looked like a fish out of water.
Stuart Slater, again already mentioned a few times.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Amir Karic - another one like Shumi where stupid comparisons did him no favours. Pitched to the fans as a marauding left back with a left foot every bit as good as Beckham's right foot.

Not that we ever got to find out, he played a couple of times in the league cup and then we loaned him out (I think to Palace who were in the Championship - we were in the Prem) who I don't think played him and then we sold him back to the Slovenian team we bought him from.

Didn’t he also pull up with a muscle strain as well?

Veliče Šumulikoski. When you're heralded as the Macedonian Gerrard, a sense of expectation pervades your arrival. It soon became clear that the only similarities were pretty circumstantial.
It wasn't his fault and he wasn't terrible.

Never understood why he was heralded as the macedioan Gerrard and people bought into it. He was 26/27 playing in Turkish football and we got him for 600k!

You can have one each signed by our most recent managers:

KMcK: Kalvin Phillips - so far short of the levels he showed he was capable of in his Leeds / England days.

Cook: Rekeem Harper - looked (at least) a cut above League One level from what I saw of him before he signed, but hardly kicked a ball for us.

I'll give a free pass to the Evans-era managers after he got his fingers burnt bankrolling Roy Keane in the transfer market, Lee Martin being the biggest waste of it in my opinion.

Phillips should have been our Xhaka or Henderson type signing and he could have made a big difference if he had been.

Poll: best attacking central midfielder?

Tamás Priskin

£1.7million, was with us for 3 years, and including us played for 4 clubs, scoring 8 goals in 73 appearances. Yes he scored the winner against Arsenal, but frankly, that was it.

Honorable mention to Lee Martin, bought by Roy Keane at the beginning of the 2009 season, and transfer listed at the end of it ...

For such a long time though Priskin was my password for everything!

Yes, Slater is top of my list. Probably something about still being young enough to be (fairly) uncynical about football. Just didn't cut it, even after relegation.

Of the others mentioned:

Shumi suffered from the ludicrous Gerrard comparison and Magilton's Supermarket Sweep approach to stockpiling midfielders. He was a decent player when he did play though.

Sam Parkin suffered from Royle trying to play him like Kuqi even though he was a different player (see also Scowcroft when he came back on loan) and Royle's complete lack of interest in coaching and improving players. Particularly careless given how skint we were at that point.

Eddie Youds, yeah that's a big one. Injury and a lack of professionalism wasn't it?

Interesting you say that about Royle. I had a good chat with an ex-player a couple of months ago that said Royle was utterly useless as a coach. Literally had zero interest in coaching and left it all to Willie Donachie. Great man manager though.

Is my memory failing me or wasn’t the “Macedonian Gerrard” stuff largely because he bore a vague passing resemblance to him rather than anything related to his play?

It’s with a heavy heart that I say Sergei Baltacha.

Probably the most imaginative signing in our history and I still think very fondly of him.

I remember the excitement of his debut v Stoke, playing out of position on a terrible pitch, scoring the opener just after half time and us winning 5-1.

Prompted me to buy a CCCP replica shirt which took 3 weeks to come from Europe and is now worth a tidy sum, except my mum donated it to a jumble sale.

But after that initial spark, he was always injured. I don’t think John Duncan ever played him in his rightful position and, although the class was clearly there, the body just kept breaking down.

Like I say, I still think of him as a hero but that’s my heart talking not my head.

Disappointed is the right word. If we’re talking flops, then Priskin, Parkin, Martin etc are still way above him.

Yes, 100%.

He effectively replaced Woods and Lambert, and I thought he’d rip it up.

He had some good moments, but overall he was a disappointment.

The thread is about disappointment, not about flops, hence my comment about Priskin not disappointing because I didn’t rate him before he came.

Sergei is an interesting one. I had no idea what to expect. He looked like a centre half but Duncan wouldn’t play him there. Likeable bloke and I suspect he’d have done better for us had he had a better manager than JD.

I was at the Stoke game and that pitch was more of a ploughed field. Good day though.

Edit: no wonder it was cold. Seems like yesterday - barest details here. From memory I think Mick Mills was Stoke’s manager

Bet the excitement didn’t last long. When I first saw him play I thought wtf, there must be more to him than that. Nope, there wasn’t.

Luciano Civelli

Had looked decent, so it was really disappointing he got that terrible knee injury and only ended up playing a dozen or so games for us.

A lot of them come down to injury (or natural decline) robbing us of players who ought to have been good. Ivar Ingimarsson, Luciano Civelli and Jimmy Bullard being examples of this.

We spent so long chasing Michael Chopra, but only got him when he had been broken by his addiction.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
