| MOTD - Handball Incident 23:13 - Aug 30 with 2899 views | Shobby | For what it is worth, the MOTD analysts, Shay Given and Ellen White, both felt Maguire deliberately handled the ball and thus should have been a free kick to us regardless of whether it was an own goal or not. Watching it in slow motion made it very clear. [Post edited 30 Aug 23:16]

| MOTD - Handball Incident on 23:24 - Aug 30 with 2532 views | PioneerBlue | Watching the whole thing back is what VAR was invented for. Absolutely absurd they only focus on the deflection missing the fact there was an incorrectly reffed foul in the lead up. If that works for offside why donwe have to go back and check a goal for all incidents and offsides. Or has that changed too? | |

Premier League Match Centre on X The referee's call of goal for Manchester United was checked and confirmed by VAR - with it deemed that Maguire was not the immediate goalscorer after an accidental handball. VAR "It's an own goal and the accidental handball is not punishable, so we recommend you award the goal."

Idk if VAR have been told to hurry up this season but it seemed a very quick consensus for a decision which to say the least seems to be the focal point for all the discussion after the match. Brentford penalty not given seems an even worse call from the ref for me. Absolutely zero obstacle in the way and 1m away the ref and Var cant see Bogle stand on Schades boot. Appalling decision.

Such a strange rule. Surely the offense of handball is what is the important thing, once it is recognised that is the point where play should be stopped, right? We'll probably get a letter of apology from the PGMOL, if we're lucky, no chance the goal will be chalked off retrospectively. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| MOTD - Handball Incident on 23:34 - Aug 30 with 2368 views | Ryorry | Very clear indeed, from that slo-mo you could see Maguire deliberately angle his palm onto and in fact slightly cup it. Very unlucky two goals (Nunez’s slip previously) changed the game unfortunately. Compare and contrast with Leeds not having a pen awarded against them. Though clearly we need to stop resembling a group vino collapso when things go against us. Very good and fair coverage from the MoTD presenters, makes a welcome change! | |

That is still unclear whether VAR checked the handball and deemed it accidental (or more accurately, not a foul) or if VAR didn't check the handball and waved through the referee's on pitch decision of accidental handball. [Post edited 30 Aug 23:37]

I accept the law is if it's an own-goal then a previous accidental handball by the attacker is nulified, but I see no concrete definition of a own-goal in the laws. I certainly don't class a inadvertent deflection from a defender an own-goal.
| MOTD - Handball Incident on 23:47 - Aug 30 with 2179 views | lordsambuca | As someone that played albeit at an amateur level if I had controlled the ball with my hand (s)n accidentally or otherwise I would have just stopped and owned up to it, expecting that the ref would probably have seen it and based on an inert set of ethics. Clearly Macguire has has neither. But, this is the Premier League in 2026. | | | |
| MOTD - Handball Incident on 23:48 - Aug 30 with 2167 views | FoghornGleghorn | The whole VAR process seems to have got itself thoroughly confused. The decision to let the goal stand seems to have hinged on Maguire's shot not being goalbound after the handball, and to let that happen seems to imply that the ref must have seen the handball but made a snap decision to let it go for a second to see where the shot was going. That's impossible because of where he was standing - so, he missed the clear and obvious handball, so the game should have stopped at that point and what happened afterwards shouldn't have mattered, surely? None of it makes sense. | | | |

Too much money in the game now for ethics to be a consideration.

The issue is that if it's accidental but goal directly comes from it. It's no goal anyway. It did. So the decision is a predictable disgrace even if you accept accidental. Which it wasn't.

IFAB It is an offence if a player scores in the opponents' goal: * Directly from their hand/arm, even if accidental, including by the goalkeeper * Immediately after the ball has touched their hand/arm, even if accidental Following an accidental handball by an attacker: * If the ball is clearly moving wide of the goal but is touched/played by a defending player and a clear own goal occurs, the goal should be awarded
| MOTD - Handball Incident on 00:17 - Aug 31 with 1966 views | lordsambuca | Come on guys. There is no debate here it is handball plain and simple. Both his arms are up. You know if that is Portman Road that is called. Look at the images. Its both arms. it is poor from Macguire and poor from the Ref and the officials. Telling that Macguire ignored O'Neill when he put it to him. it should not even be a debate. | | | |

Putting aside how ridiculous that is as a rule, there's no way the ref can have seen that shot "clearly moving wide of the goal".

yes. If it was an *accidental* handball Under pretty much any modern interpretation of the handball law this was not accidental. It was basically a volleyball block! If it happens on the halfway line it's a free-kick, frankly if it had happened at the other end it's a free-kick, and if it had been a defender then 9 times out of 10 they give a penalty. The ref should have blown straight away for it, and for VAR not to even look at the offence itself was nothing short of a disgrace.

Refs are corrupt. We saw that at the world cup. VAR is their tool, to ensure the "right " result for the "right" team Remember the penalty Chappers should have got in the season before last. Not even sent to VAR even though it was an attempted decapitation in front of the ref. I rest my case

whether it is deemed an own goal or is deemed a deflection and the goal is awarded to the attacker depends entirely on whether the initial shot is on target. It is pretty clear on that rule. Correctly ruled an own goal, if we ignore the handball bit.
| MOTD - Handball Incident on 06:57 - Aug 31 with 1065 views | Axeldalai_lama | As they said on MOTD they were trying to be too clever for their own good, barely looking, if at all, at the actual handball offence and only concentrating on the possible loophole of the deflection. Even if they didn't want to overrule the ref couldn't they have sent him to the screen for the handball? Surely seeing that in all its glory would make it obvious to the ref? Seems like a situation var was designed for, and they manage to feck it up completely. | | | |

Agreed. The point is that had one of our players pushed the ball away from himself in our own penalty area, it’d have been a penalty and nobody on planet earth would have queried it. It was a deliberate handball. As for the ‘he was protecting himself’ idea, I presume if you are in a wall and the free kickback is heading for your face you can punch it away? No - unless you play for the big six. It was nonsense refereeing and Maguire cheated. It wouldn’t have changed the result. We would still have lost, but that doesn’t make it right.
