Town Make Cairney Approach
Thursday, 8th Jan 2026 14:23

Town have made an approach to Fulham regarding veteran skipper Tom Cairney.

As per Sky Sports, the Blues have made contact with the Premier League club regarding the 34-year-old, whose contract is up at the end of the season.

We understand that is correct but that the potential deal has moved no further than that as it stands.

Nottingham-born Cairney was with the Leeds United academy before moving on to Hull City in 2007 and it was with the Tigers where he made his breakthrough into senior football.

In 2013, he moved on to Blackburn, initially on loan, before departing for Fulham in 2015 where he has remained ever since.

Cairney, who is 6ft 1in tall, won two full Scotland caps having previously played at U19 and U21 levels.

Central midfield is an area the Blues are known to be looking to strengthen in this window.

If you read the post by RIPBobby properly, you will realise that there is only one person lacking knowledge, and it isn't him

I think it would have to be a loan with Fulham paying a chunk of his wages. Otherwise FFP could be an issue if we wanted to sign 2 or 3 others. But to put a bid in for Fulham's captain could be a good move.

Granit Xhaka has been one of the best signings of the year in the Prem. He is 33.
Cairney started and captained Fulham last night and he is loved by their fans.
Some of the comments on here are unreal.

He doesn't play regularly for Fulham. He has only started recently because they are missing AFCON absentees and have a multitude of injuries. He's a bit part player for them, coming off the bench. Perhaps he could sit on ours and dicuss pensions with Young?

Always admired him as a baller and would definitely be a slight upgrade in a particular position...but I'm not sure that improvement in the 8 is exactly what we need with Cajuste and Taylor both fighting it out rather well in my opinion already. We already have a player in Nunez flying along in the 10 and he isn't a 6 (at least not in the mould of an Azor who is for me the first name on the team sheet now)

The squad needs balancing in this window as much as improving I think. Not sure this move necessarily works towards that?

Having said all that, I will trust the process and those employed for their competence in their assigned roles to do what they believe is right for the club and for the manager and his team to land where we ought to land come May.

Would love a little punt on Callum Wilson though if its experience and Bona fide prem quality we're looking for in this window
