Town Facing Midweek Trip to Southampton
Sunday, 8th Mar 2026 18:26

Town face a midweek trip to Southampton after the Saints progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by winning 1-0 away at Fulham in round five this afternoon.

The Blues were due to travel to face the Hampshire side on Good Friday, April 3rd, but Southampton will now instead be involved in the FA Cup that weekend.

Town might have been able to move their twice-postponed trip to Portsmouth to Good Friday had Norwich, who are scheduled to play Pompey that day, progressed through their fifth round tie, but the Canaries were beaten 3-0 at Leeds this afternoon.

The Blues now have to find dates for the visits to both Southampton and Portsmouth with only two midweeks available before the end of the season, 14th/15th April between the trip to Norwich and home game with Middlesbrough and 28th/29th April following the away match at West Brom and the final fixture of the campaign at home to QPR.

Elsewhere, second-placed Middlesbrough won 4-0 at QPR this afternoon to move five points ahead of the Blues, who are fourth, but with Town having a game in hand.

Two teams, one bus, one hotel, two nights on the south coast

It is what it is, tired of worrying about it to be honest, we will make the playoffs come what may, no-one frightens us there. But Millwall and Boro both have to come here yet and we saw what happens t others in the run in when it gets really serious.....

Bazza, almost for sure we'll make the play offs, however in my view that isn't good enough. Should spark one or two replies I would think! Could of course wait till next season, when you'd have to be unbelievably bad not to make them!

Armchaircritic. Same old bs from you. If u woulsnt have taken the playoffs at the start of the season, then ur a fool. One of those fans who thought it our divine right to win the lge, no doubt.

These congested fixtures will go against us, we are already chasing points but I would rather have the points that games in hand. It almost certainly going to be play offs now, on paper we should win them hands down but for me Wrexham will want it more and already have our number. Southampton if they sneak in the playoffs will be a dangerous game. Personally I think we are not ready for promotion, another season building this squad (just like Leeds did) will benefit us. I certainly don’t want us to scrape up via the playoffs offs only to be humiliated every week like last season, next season will be more parachute payments and hopefully we will have a settled team to build on and win the league next season.

blues1, no divine right to anything as far as I'm concerned, apart from food, water and some shelter. Would most certainly have expected top two, notice I said " expected " not "entitled " to. Not bothered about outright Champions, nice if we did it. If you think that was too much to ask then I'm more than welcome to have a friendly debate about it. As for being a fool, well I'll certainly not call you that in reply as I don't even know you personally.

So it will be Southampton on April 14th and Portsmouth on April 28th.
April 28th must be kept free for Southampton if they are to progress to the next round of the FA Cup

Armchair, the problem I have with posts like yours and some others I can't be ar5ed to name is the air of giving up at the slightest setback. Yes, yesterday was disappointing, as was the Wrexham performance/result but we are 5 points off second with a game in hand and 33 points to play for.
I would have expected us to be challenging for top 2 with our relative wealth/manager/squad, and guess what? WE ARE!!! so what's the problem? Did you expect to have it wrapped up by now? because no one has, have they?

Lets all get behind the boys, It sounded like we did yesterday 2nd half, I wasn't there yesterday, but I'll be at Stoke on a wet Tuesday doing just that. COYB!

paulc, I think if you take a look at the post I made yesterday post match, it was fair and balanced. Actually I said the second half was much better and sometimes you have days like that. It was certainly far better than Wrexham, no one's going to dispute that. The fact that no one has completely " wrapped " it up, is in my opinion and that of quite a lot of others is down to the sub standard nature of the division this season. Though as the teams closest to Coventry have to play each other, they just about have one foot in the PL, barring a second meltdown. We are as you say still challenging for a top 2 place, so let's stop making excuses and go and claim it, shall we? Nothing less than 6 points this week is likely to be good enough, pending other results of course. We have Boro and Millwall to come here. At this precise moment it's still just in our hands. Have we got the bottle for it? I'm sure we have the talent. One without the other is no good. Hope it's dry on Tuesday! I will be watching from home. Have a safe return trip and bring home 3 points!

Boro 4-0 away to QPR was not what I wanted to hear. Doesn't look as if they are buckling any time soon. But we must just keep going, as the Kieran mantra says, and see where we end up on the final day of the season.

Hey Blues1. There is no way any Ipswich fan was hopeful of making the playoffs.
It was always finish as champions.

Still along the way, no doubt fans have adjusted their expectations in anticipation of NOT being that team. They’ll find it hard to score against being a goal behind, especially on their travels.

In Akpom, Smodics these two players in particular have been increadibly disappointing. Now with Smzodics gone till seasons end, we still have Akpom who could have contributed against the Foxes.
He must be dialled in with Boro (ex-team) doing them favours.

Everyone else is fine even if it hasn’t panned out with any goals from J Taylor, or as many from Hirst.

Still there is no point in worrying about the playoffs if they are the fallback. Definitely need players coming in with better aiming at this part of the season. Walle Egeli is testimony to this and is getting a win here, a draw there with unbelievably important goals.

Nice if the higher paid attackers with history could do the same.

Fixture congestion and dates of these games are not good at all….
If anything we are better to finish 4th as we won’t beat Wrexham.
Middlesbrough could be out of sight by the time we play them and the games in hand always amend in tears…. ask Southampton
