Decided I’m not going to the game Monday 20:43 - Mar 29 with 22866 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

Sometimes you’ve got to take a moral standpoint.

Never been so disappointed by our club.

For people like Newcy to say he doesn’t want to bring his kids to the games, for Rainbow Tractors having to make their account private on Twitter, for the girl who does the Art who’s been dragged into it by Reform, for those of us who’ve received hundreds of abusive replies by far-right scumbags, and for anyone else who - as a result of our clubs actions - have had OUR club cause them problems this week.. for those people I’m going to vote with me feet.

I think this is the wrong choice to make.

McKenna and the players don’t deserve to lose the support, if anything they deserve more support and a big united front.

Having a full house and positive atmosphere would be a big f’ck you to many.

If you’re not going to this one then your season is over as surely you won’t go to any more until Ashton is gone? And that probably won’t happen until the summer.

But it isn't going to be a full house, is it ? As well as people like Rommy taking a principled stand there will be others who want to attend with dignity to show they can rise above but who will feel unwelcome now. And I think there will be some more diffident supporters who stay away because they don't want to get involved in any trouble, and if they would otherwise bring small children or elderly relatives I think that is pretty reasonable.

In other words the Fartrage visit means we are not a family club at the moment and we need further and decisive action beyond Ashton's apology to regain our once respected position in the football world.

Drop in the ocean obviously, but I won't purchase another game from Town TV, or buy anything from the club shop, until Ashton goes. I can watch games for free but always purchased them, thinking I was supporting the club, in a small way.
For me, this is about more than McKenna, O'Shea and the rest of the squad. It's about the credibility of the football club and the message it sends out to the world.

I'm going because the players I support didn't bring any of this on themselves. Giving up on them now would be hugely counterproductive. Just think about it.

Spot on, this season has been a struggle and fans getting divided at this stage will likely end in early play off defeat or even dropping out of top six.

Save any anti Farage/Ashton stuff until season is finished.

April is a huge month, I am there to support the team on the pitch at the end of the day.

I couldn't care less who Ashton dines with.

I do care that Ashton

Lied to the press and thus fans about the circumstances
Upset a number of our players
Upset a section of the fans
Damaged our future player recruitment
Reduced the value of future club sponsorships

Trying to minimise people's anger is your call. But for most of us (who are angry) it's so much more than Ashton having dinner with Farage.

gtsb1966, I 100% agree with you

At the end of the day, Nigel Farage is a well liked and well respected MP by many thousands of people in this country, and so is Reform.
If he wasn't popular,he wouldn't have been voted in at Clacton.
He has tons of rallies around the country that are sold out in no time
He represented south east England for 21 years as MEP in the European Parliament.
Like it or not, the bloke is very popular.

It's become a joke now on this forum and people have blown it way, way, way out of proportion, with many jumping on the bandwagon just for the sake of it.
I have been going to Portman Road for 55 years now and I couldn't give two figs about what has happened the past week.

Mark Ashton can invite or have lunch with whoever he likes at the football club.
I am involved in ITFC to support my team on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon or midweek.
Grow up people!

That's one way of spinning it. The alternative narrative is that Farage is a deeply unpopular figure (66% or people have an unfavourable opinion of him: https://yougov.com/en-gb/artic and that he really shouldn't be respected. How many times did he show up to work as an MEP? How often is he seen in Clacton or Westminster since becoming an MP? As a general rule, do you respect people who receive a very generous and publicly funded salary but don't do the job they are paid to do? Genuine question, because personally I struggle to see how his attitude and approach is worthy of respect.

Similarly, do you think he has treated our club in a respectful way by using it to promote himself and his political party? He will have done so knowing that it would be deeply divisive but did it anyway. Is that to be respected?

And your characterisation of what happened last week as being Ashton having lunch with Farage is well wide of the mark. Why are you trying to spin what actually happened in this way? We ended up plastered all over the media with Farage shirts up in our changing room, with him holding up our shirt, gurning away in front of the hallowed PR turf. The club then lied about what happened and issued a half arsed apology. So a bit more happened last week than Ashton sharing a Tesco meal deal with a random politician.

That you don't know this or are pretending that's not what happened is a worry. That you then feel you have the right to tell people to "grow up" on the back or your misunderstanding or misrepresentation of what has happened is really not on. Rommers has clearly thought about this a lot and has made a difficult decision that I'm sure will hurt him. Others will do the same. You've given this no thought at all. Reflect on that and come back to us on who really needs to show a bit more maturity in these circumstances.

I'd like to see Blue Action members who feel so inclined after their treatment from Ashton to be the focal point of a 10 minute sing song outside the ground for all that want to register their displeasure and then a noisy, team supporting, mass late entry. In the absence of this or something similar I will also be watching from home and my seats will be empty.
If the board announce he's gone in the Summer I'll be there.

How else do you suggest a stand is made sensibly, without fuelling their hate/division wagon?

Sorry, I don’t know what you mean by ‘fuelling their hate/division wagon’. Whose?

I just don’t think seeking to negatively affect people who have nothing whatsoever to do with this is the way to go. The football club and its employees, bar the people responsible for this, are not Reform. Same with the crowd.

What would I do? Find a way to speak to Ashton and the people he reports to. It’s not impossible. I’ve done it before on other non football matters and once with a former Chairman of this club way back when.

But it’s a free country and it’s up to the individual to do as they please.

Well you do you buddy, at the end of the day you're answerable to your own conscience.

I wont be going but then I wasn't anyway. I wish I was!

Problem is, if everyone who feels strongly about it stays away, we could end up with a majority crowd of Faragists at PR. Not sure that's what we want either.

just leave yourself an exit strategy. make monday's game be you having your say. because if the club doesn't back down and ashton stays, which is in all probability is what will happen, you need to find away back to the club you love. you will need to accept this flaw. being in a minority position politically means you often don't get exactly what you want, and being able to get on with that is pretty much a fact of life.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

"Damaged our future player recruitment" - this isn't to be underestimated. Football has disproportionate players from ethnic minorities. Here's what they think of Farage:

Most people hate him, but ethnic minorities **really** hate him. Do you think the guy on the phone negotiating with them being Farage's bestie, the guy who gave him a publicity junket, lied about it, then refused to admit any wrongdoing, do you think that'll be a draw or a repellent?

Some here seem confident, based on nothing, that Ashton will be gone by the summer. It won't be a self-fulfilling prophesy if it's business-as-usual in the stands on matchdays. If he's still here when the transfer window opens, it'll have harmful ramifications for us next and in future seasons.

I suspect they’re well and truly filtered. That’s why actually speaking to people is so much more effective. Hard to do in our IT driven world, of course.

The last time I tried it was when my dad was missed off the Covid vaccine priority list. I thought his MP, that old bat Theresa Coffey, would do for starters. Well I didn’t manage to get to speak to her, but through contacts I did get through to her Private Office and PS. We had a little chat that convinced her I wasn’t going away.

My dad got his ‘invite’ a few days later but I don’t think I had anything whatsoever to do with that. Sheer coincidence. I did though get a letter from Coffey at about the same time. Trouble was the paper was a bit too shiny to fit on the roll and would have needed trimming. So it went in the shredder - bit like her career really.

I do think he's gone - not because of a morale decision - but for a business decision.

Have worked for large organisations involved in developing strong brands - as the finance bod. The damage to our brand (and finances) is real - and the owners will know that.

He's toast - just wish they'd get a move on and then we can all move on.

Respect your stance- just as I respect those who are unhappy with what’s happened but want to attend to support the team.

Some things are more important than football.
We can’t get my Great Uncle to the ground a lot atm (hasn’t been since Norwich) so I wouldn’t be going anyway, but my Uncle and I discussed it and similarly we think even if we could make it, we wouldn’t go on this occasion.
